The Department of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology is seeking a Research Specialist with a solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques and skills associated with molecular biology and immunology. The Research Specialist is capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of studies and evaluating results.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Participates in planning studies and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices involving modern molecular immunology. These lab-based duties will include,

Responsible for the processing of blood samples from patients in various clinical research studies.

Responsible for the use of Open specimen, a biorepository inventory system.

Able to perform routine laboratory technique using sterile technique.

Exercises good judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences and results.

Isolation and manipulation of human blood cells.

Multicolor flow cytometry analysis.

Computer based analysis of flow cytometry data.

Assays of cellular immune function.

Independent troubleshooting of technical and experimental issues.

Selects, develops, performs, and evaluates research methods; operates appropriate equipment.

Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Is knowledgeable of and employs good tissue culture techniques.

Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, internet searching, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.

Uses good practices for data record keeping and analysis.

Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.

Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Maintains equipment and ensures laboratory compliance for annual safety inspections.

Keeps current knowledge of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements. Interacts with company representatives and obtaining quotations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques associated with molecular biology and immunology.

Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.

Knowledge of biological sciences, chemistry, or physics.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
