Organization Overview:
The American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV) is the professional association for individuals who apply the principles of comparative veterinary medicine to zoo and wildlife species. Founded in 1946 by a handful of veterinarians working mostly part-time in zoos, today there are more than 1,300 members from over 50 countries.
The mission of the AAZV is to empower its members to advance the profession and enhance wild animal health, welfare, and conservation. To achieve this, the AAZV serves as an advocate for the profession, as well as the primary source of continuing education and advanced expertise in zoo and wildlife medicine. The Association’s primary activities include producing the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine (JZWM), coordinating an annual conference to advance state-of-the-art knowledge in the field, and operating the Wild Animal Health Fund, which advances critical research in zoo and wildlife medicine.
AAZV is hiring a Program Director to support the organization’s programs and operations. The Program Director will report to the Executive Director, whom resides in Minnesota. Please note: This position can be remote or hybrid in Jacksonville, Florida. If the role is performed at AAZV’s Jacksonville office an annual bonus is available. A successful applicant will have the ability, motivation, and initiative to work full-time from any location.
Purpose of the Program Director Position :
This is a permanent, salaried, full-time position to support AAZV in achieving programmatic success. The Program Director works closely with the Executive Director, all other staff, and selected board or committee members to support programmatic goals. Responsibilities include managing AAZV’s membership, annual conference, journal, research grants, and scholarship programs.
Responsibilities Include:
Plan and execute AAZV’s annual, in-person, conference
Communicate program activities and progress in a timely manner
Supervision of assigned AAZV staff and contractors
· Work with program partners in a professional manner
· Continually evaluate and adapt program operations to meet the needs of members and participants
· Support AAZV teams to achieve program success
· Prepare budget, financial forms, and monthly reports
· Responsible for keeping program activities within budget
· Monitor program/project timelines and alert leadership of possible issues
Follow AAZV established procedures and guidelines
Assist with internal controls by cross-checking certain work done by others and having others check your work
· Review, edit, and create content for programs as needed
· Other duties as assigned
Desired Skills and Qualifications :
A bachelor’s degree is required. Preferred candidates will have experience with event planning, membership organization operations, and some experience in a related animal care field.
In addition, a successful candidate will have:
Ability, initiative, and motivation to work productively in a home office and communicate clearly and often with remote team members through email, text message, phone, and video calls
Experience with Apple products, CRM software, HTML, event software, social applications, and Microsoft Office products
Ability to learn and use new technology quickly
Ability to work independently as well as thrive in a team-oriented environment
Commitment to accuracy and detail, particularly regarding financial documents
Willingness to learn and work within an established system
Willingness to assist with policy and systems development
Excellent organizational and follow-through skills
Ability to travel for four to six weeks each year, including international travel

· Possess excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with staff, volunteers, students, board members, and the public
Represent AAZV professionally to the zoo community, government agencies, and external partners
Starting Annual Salary Range : $82,000 – $85,000, plus benefits
