Job Summary

Job Title: Assistant to the Associate Principal

Description of basic functions and responsibilities:

The primary duty of the Assistant to the Associate Principal is to assist the Associate Principal of Administrative Services (APAS) in all areas of student supervision, except discipline. In this context, the discipline prohibition specifically means the Assistant to the Associate Principal shall not suspend students, assign students to detention or in-house suspension or otherwise assign students to consequences of unacceptable behavior. Additionally, the Assistant to the Associate Principal shall not make recommendations for such suspensions, detentions, or other disciplinary consequences.

Generally, the Assistant to the Associate Principal assists the APAS in the areas of attendance, student behavior management and student supervision and acts as a liaison and resource between classroom teachers and the offices of the APAS.

Major duties and responsibilities:

Assist teachers and students in resolving behavior problems including appropriate follow-up with parents, counselors and other staff, as well as public and private agencies

Assist with attendance follow-up

Assist with pupil supervision

Assist staff with classroom management strategies

Maintain liaison with out-of-school or community-based organizations or agencies

Develop and implement crisis intervention strategies and programs

Maintain accurate and objective records

Other duties that may be appropriate to his/her credential and as assigned by the principal

Supervision exercised or received

Under the supervision and direction of the principal or designee

Salary

The Assistant to the Associate Principal is compensated based upon appropriate placement on the certificated salary schedule. Additionally, in recognition of supervision duties performed beyond the contractual workday, the Assistant to the Associate Principal shall receive a stipend defined in Appendix C Stipend Addendum of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Minimum qualifications

Appropriate secondary teaching credential required

Classroom and/or counseling experience preferred

Evaluation

Annually by the principal or designee in a manner consistent with the provisions contained within the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Requirements / Qualifications

The screening process leading to the appointment of Assistant to the Associate Principal (Student Advisor) will consist of:

Step 1: Paper Screening - All applicants

Step 2: Personal Interview - For semi-finalists as determined by paper screening. The interview will be conducted by an interview team

Step 3: Finalist Interview - For finalists as determined by semi-finalist interview

In addition to possessing the ability to successfully meet the major/other duties and responsibilities, the successful applicant will be selected on the basis of the following:

1. Knowledge of different teaching strategies that lead to successful classroom management

2. Knowledge of basic school district functions, policies, rules and regulations

3. Ability to apply good judgment in recognizing the scope of authority

4. Ability to analyze situations and make decisions on procedural matters without immediate supervision

5. Ability to maintain the security of confidentiality of specific records, information and files

6. Ability to prioritize and coordinate workflow and timelines so as to meet established deadlines

7. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively in both oral and written form

8. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relations with those contacted in the performance of required duties

9. Ability to work with, and the knowledge of, different ethnic groups

10. Ability to provide leadership to the staff on matters relating to student discipline, classroom management/control as it relates to student deportment

11. Ability to work with parents and students in solving student discipline/attendance problems

12. Knowledge of community resources and ability to maximize their impact on the campus

13. Ability to implement appropriate sections of the school's safety plan

14. Ability to supervise night time activities as assigned by administration

15. Ability to provide supervision and secure the school campus before and after school

16. Ability to respond in a positive manner to students in all situations

17. Ability to interact with staff, students and parents in a professional manner.

18. Willingness to supervise after-school events

19. Secondary teaching credential required

20. Administrative services credential preferred
