Job Announcement

This position is a part time position (job share) in the Central Intake Services Unit. Responsible for providing intake services for cases involving juveniles. Duties include establishing jurisdiction, venue, and probable cause, determining appropriate offenses and whether the case will be handled through diversion or formal court action. Decisions will be made using agency approved screening and assessment tools and maintain compliance with the Code of Virginia, Department of Juvenile Justice Standards and CSU Policies and Procedures. Responsible for providing diversion services, which may include referral to community resources, facilitating educational interventions, or referring to a diversion hearing. Generates legal paperwork for all formal court cases, prepares cases for detention hearings and occasionally requires court appearances to include testifying and submitting recommendations to judges. Requires data entry in databases managed by the Department of Juvenile Justice and the CSU.

Schedule: This position is a job-share and works part-time, 20 hours, per week.

Intake Officer

+ Provides intake services, determines probable cause, issues related to jurisdiction, venue and appropriateness of filing petitions and/or issuance of detention or shelter care orders;

+ Reviews complaints filed by law enforcement and citizens, conducts assessments to determine appropriateness for diversion;

+ Case manages diversion clients;

+ Decisions are made in compliance with the Code of Virginia, and Department of Juvenile Justice and/or Court Services Unit policies and procedures;

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

+ Knowledge of casework supervision practices and procedures;

+ Knowledge of the principles of psychology and sociology;

+ Knowledge of current social and economic conditions;

+ Ability to interview and counsel clients;

+ Ability to prepare complete case records and reports;

+ Ability to develop effective working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in social/behavioral sciences, criminal justice, or education plus two years of professional experience in probation work, social work, criminal justice, juvenile justice, education, or counseling. A master's degree in the disciplines above may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

+ Master's degree or combination of bachelor's degree in a related field and two or more years of experience working in the juvenile criminal justice field.

+ Knowledge of the Code of Virginia.

+ Working knowledge of the Supreme Court of VA Case Management System (CMS) and Juvenile Justice's Balanced Data Gathering Environment (BADGE).

+ Excellent verbal and written skills.

+ Strong working relationships including professionals from outside the Juvenile Court Service Unit.

+ Ability to think quickly, exercise good judgment while working in an independent setting where immediate supervision may not be possible.

+ Proficient using word processing and spreadsheet management skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

+ The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check and Child Protective Services Registry check.

+ This position has been identified as an essential employee by the county and requires staff to report to work regardless of emergency conditions, such as inclement weather and county closings.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to retrieve data using a computer. Ability to communicate clearly both in person and on the phone. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:

Panel interview and may include a written exercise.
