Our Great American Risk Solutions division is looking for a Data Science Director to join their team. Depending on location this role is open to hybrid or remote workers.

Essential Job Functions And Responsibilities

Participates in and oversees the Data Science team in analyzing internal and external data and performing statistical modeling. Recommends action plan to the business:

Ensures the determination of requirements and project plans. Establishes priorities and ensures progress.

Evaluates project status and resource utilization and implements changes to improve the team's effectiveness.

Responsible for performance and coaching of staff and decisions regarding talent selection, development, and performance management. Plans and ensures that the team meets budget and performance targets.

Ensures that department or functional area meets policies and procedures. Aligns business unit with business objectives.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in data science, computer science, operations research, statistics, applied mathematics, or a related quantitative field or equivalent work experience is required. PhD preferred.

Experience: Generally, 8 or more years of experience, including 4 or more years of leadership experience.

Additional Job Functions

Define product vision, roadmap, and growth opportunities, and communicate with stakeholders throughout projects.

Lead the Data Science team in the delivery of advanced machine learning and design of experimental projects.

Collaborate with business leaders to analyze needs and align product roadmap to strategic goals.

Work closely with product manager and business leaders to create and maintain product backlog according to business value (or ROI).

Remain up to date on trends and best practices for modeling, analytics, and AI tools, visualization tools, etc.

Uses extensive knowledge and research into data tools to guide the integration of new and existing tools into the organization’s data science tech stack.

Participate in product-release plans and set expectations for delivery of new functionalities.

Serve as product ambassador internally and externally, sharing knowledge and answering questions.

The Director Data Science oversees the data science department’s training and competency development, determining best practices and work standards. The Director Data Science initiates data science programs across the department not only with a view of improving departmental performance but also with a focus on revenue growth and achievement of the business’ overall targets and objectives

Collaborates and partners with senior business executives and key stakeholders in creating the data science roadmap tailored to constantly aid data governance across the business and improve the overall business performance.

Partners with other non-technical departments within the business assisting them in understanding how data science can benefit them and improve their effectiveness and performance.

Additional Skills/Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required, master’s or Ph.D. preferred

Outstanding communication, presentation, and leadership skills

Knowledge of LLM and AI tools, as well as fundamentals of insurance modeling and advanced analytics techniques.

Strong knowledge of agile methodology for project management

Experience with visualization software, Tableau a plus

Great American Risk Solutions is seeking a full-time Data Science Director to build out our Applied Analytics group. This role is an opportunity for the right person to build a Data Science program, encompassing predictive analytics, AI/ML, LLMs, fraud detection and more.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of leading teams in delivery of advanced machine learning and design of experiment projects.
