Director of Communications

Scope of Work:

The Director of Communications reports to the Vice President of Communications and works closely with CRES’ communications consultants and CRES’ government relations, external relations and policy teams. The Director has an intensive writing portfolio, while overseeing all communications content creation, and ensures content flows efficiently throughout the organization and to external audiences. In addition, this position manages relationships with professional communicators on Capitol Hill and with allied organizations in DC and beyond the Beltway.

Responsibilities:

Direct the team’s content creation and distribution strategies, serving as the lead writer

Draft high-level content such as op-eds, executive remarks and talking points, issue messaging, as well as materials such as the annual report, polling decks and briefing documents

Oversee the creation of communications materials such as press releases, newsletters, blogs, videos, social media posts and website updates

Oversee the creation of materials that support the CRES brand

Direct the Capitol Hill Communicators Program, serving as the primary contact to build and maintain strong relationships to promote CRES messaging on Capitol Hill and across states and districts

Manage the Cool Conservative Communicators Collaborating on Climate Change with CRES (C6WC) events and programming

Serve as the primary contact for communications programs at Hill-focused organizations such as the Conservative Climate Caucus, the Conservative Climate Foundation, the Climate Solutions Caucus, the Western Caucus and the Western Caucus Foundation

Implement communications strategies and tactics to support CRES’ mission and goals

Engage in daily communications strategies on key legislative issues

Support communications functions at CRES and CRES-sponsored events

Manage external communications consultants to ensure deliverables meet expectations

Oversee distribution list management, working closely with other departments to ensure growth and accuracy

Provide input to the Vice President of Communications for the development of CRES’ communications workplan, including goal setting and tracking metrics

Support External Relations team with information needed for grant applications and reports

Ensure CRES brand and style guidelines are adhered to for all external content

Performs other duties as assigned

Required Education, Experience and Skills:

Six to eight years of experience including time as a communications director, press secretary or similar role on Capitol Hill, at a high-profile government agency or for a high-profile public figure or corporation

At least a four-year college degree in a relevant field of study

Strong writing and editing skills, particularly for news outlet publications

Demonstrated track record of developing advocacy messaging and talking points on newsworthy topics from a conservative point of view

Incredible attention to detail and process-management skills – must have a proven record of accomplishment of shepherding projects from conception to successful execution

Experience working directly with principal-level officials for public events and media interviews

Professional relationships with senior policy and communications staff on Capitol Hill

Ability to execute a departmental strategic plan that aligns with the organization's mission and goals

Working knowledge of climate and energy issues

Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently; ability to successfully juggle multiple priorities

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other relevant software

Ability to travel to out-of-state conferences
