Sown To Grow (STG) is a K12 education technology platform that empowers schools to improve student social, emotional, and academic health through an easy and engaging reflection and feedback process. In a short weekly routine, students check-in emotionally and reflect on the strategies that are working best for them (or new ones to try). They start with a focus on emotional well-being and expand to academic goal-setting over time. Teachers, principals, and counselors understand real-time student emotions with AI-driven insights, and proactively support student needs.

Our team is seeking a UX Designer to join our team, who is passionate about building a product that builds relationships between teachers and students, instills a love of learning, and leads to improved academic and life outcomes for young people. Our organization is at an exciting stage of growth, with hundreds of thousands of teachers/students using Sown To Grow, and our team is looking to reach one million students served in the near future.

As we’ve grown, we’ve welcomed new types of users onto our platform (e.g, school principals, counselors, district administrators) -- all of whom have different roles to play in support of student emotional well-being and academic success. This has significantly increased the complexity of our product. We’re looking for an individual who is eager to understand the roles different users have in supporting students, and who is excited to build delightful and meaningful experiences for them in Sown To Grow. Your primary responsibility will be designing user flows for students, teachers, and school/district administrators as they interact and use our web-based applications, optimizing for Chromebook, tablet, and laptop experiences.

We are a small, nimble team that is inspired to make a difference in the world while building a successful business. Before starting STG, our founding team spent several years working in both the private sector and schools/districts. We care deeply about building a product that positively impacts student outcomes and makes teachers’ lives easier.

The majority of STG’s school and district partners serve predominantly low-income communities. STG is solving high impact and highly relevant problems using students’ academic and social-emotional reflections, making the work technically challenging, ethically nuanced, and fundamentally complex.

STG has received seed funding from highly selective, innovative funds including the National Science Foundation, US Department of Education, NewSchools Venture Fund, Imagine K12 (now Y Combinator Edtech), Impact Assets, Jane VC, Digital Promise and others. The company currently serves schools in 40 states and has large-scale contracts with organizations such as Metro Nashville Public Schools (TN), Oakland Unified School District (CA), St. Louis Public Schools (MO), KIPP (across multiple states), and more.

Our company and this position are based in the San Francisco Bay Area, with offices in Oakland and Menlo Park. The primary location for this position will be in Menlo Park.

Responsibilities:

Create wireframes and prototypes that effectively communicate intuitive, accessible product experiences and user flows

Carry out user research and usability testing to develop a deep understanding of customer needs, validate design decisions, and iterate on design solutions in a fast-paced and expanding industry

Partner with analytics team to leverage data to inform and validate design decisions/recommendations

Work closely with product, engineering and marketing teams to prioritize design tasks within given timelines

Maintain and contribute to a design system and style guide for consistency and scalability.

Minimum Qualifications:

3-5 years professional experience in UX design

Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in user-centered design principles and practices

Very strong attention to detail, organization/prioritization skills, and self-motivation to meet critical project milestones and deadlines

A deep understanding of design best practices, and the comfort/ability to articulate conceptual ideas and design rationale in written/oral communication formats

Proficiency working with design tools such as Figma and Adobe Creative Suite

Experience working with cross-functional teams (e.g., engineering, product, customer support, marketing), and collaborating with colleagues with diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

BA/BS degree in Design (e.g. interaction, graphic, visual communications, product, industrial), HCI, CS, or a related * field or equivalent practical experience.

Experience working collaboratively in a fast-moving startup environment

Experience in working in the education or education technology space

Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and Javascript
