Brief Description of Duties

The Assistant Professor/Director of Clinical Education for Respiratory teaches various respiratory therapy courses and oversees the clinical education for student majors. The individual reports to the Program Director. This is a 9-month, tenure track position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Director of Clinical Education (DCE) is responsible for organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and general effectiveness of all clinical experiences for students enrolled in the respiratory therapy program.

Teaches courses in respiratory therapy, including the lectures associated with clinical experiences

The DCE develops the clinical rotation for all students at each level of the program. The clinical rotation must be equitable for all students

The DCE assures that all affiliate agreements are signed and current prior to students attending clinical rotation

The DCE assures that all students have their liability insurance, health physicals, drug screening, and updated CPR card prior to assigning the student to a clinical site each semester (including summer)

The DCE maintains a relationship with all affiliates and addresses any student-related problems or concerns in a timely fashion

The DCE takes an active role in the review of student progress in the clinical setting by reviewing weekly reflective notes submitted on Blackboard by all students in clinical rotations

The DCE assures ongoing communications with clinical instructors and feedback from Respiratory Therapy Department Directors

The DCE identifies potential adjunct clinical instructors and recommends to the Program Director clinical instructors that are available on a semester-by-semester basis

The DCE schedules as-needed meetings with clinical instructors to assure an equitable evaluation of students by clinical instructors

The DCE provides training for all adjunct clinical faculty to assure consistency across clinical experiences

The DCE collaborates with the Program Director to assure adequacy of laboratory supplies and equipment

The DCE collaborates with the Program Director to conduct current student surveys, pinning ceremony and annual senior picnic

The DCE assists with recruitment of new students, advises and assists with the retention of current students; and answers student inquiries (emails and voice mail messages) in a timely manner

The DCE engages in scholarly activities and community service

Conducts a minimum of five office hours per week

Helps to develop and teach appropriate online courses

Experience with instructional technology and Blackboard is highly desirable

Teaches during the day, evening, and/or weekend; may include more than one campus site

Participates in the college governance process and college-wide committees

Adheres to college and program policies and procedures

Participates fully in curriculum development and revision

Recommends selection of textbooks and other instructional materials

Familiarity with and conducts assessment of student learning outcomes (course and program levels) in accordance with the standards of the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC), the College and Middle States Commission of Higher Education (MSCHE).

Minimum Job Requirements

Master’s degree in Respiratory Therapy and current license. Must have at least two years of teaching experience at the postsecondary level and three or more years of professional experience.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and

At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education. Community College experience preferred.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory backgroundinvestigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
