About the OJAC:

The Old Jail Art Center (OJAC) began in 1980 with four small galleries in what was originally the first permanent jail built in the county. The OJAC now comprises 17,000 square feet and is a widely acclaimed fine art museum with robust exhibition and education programming. The permanent collection currently contains over 2,300 works of art ranging from objects from Ancient Americas, Chinese tomb figures, French Impressionist paintings to modern and contemporary paintings, drawings and sculpture. The museum's Robert E. Nail Jr. Archives focuses on the preservation of collection artists’ ephemera and regional history. The museum’s standards of excellence in operations and programming have been recognized by the American Alliance of Museums through its accreditation since 1989. The OJAC is funded by a strong endowment, grants, and generous individual support.

The mission of the OJAC is to broaden engagement with visual art and culture through exhibitions, education, and preservation. The OJAC is recognized as a unique contributor to the global visual art community by sharing collections and resources, promoting the work of visual artists, expanding audience reach and diversity, and encouraging creative initiatives in the community.

The OJAC is located in Albany, Texas, a small but vibrant community in west-central Texas two hours west of Fort Worth, 30 miles from Abilene, and six hours from Marfa. Historically, the area contained military outposts and was at the cross-roads of numerous cattle trails. Today Albany (pop. 2,000) serves as a cultural hub providing visual and performing arts to the region.
