Full-time Museum Executive Director Position

The Border Patrol Museum represents the rich heritage and traditions of the United States Border Patrol. Founded in 1985, as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, the Museum contains a unique collection of Border Patrol historical documents, memorabilia, and vehicular displays.

Our archive department is widely recognized by researchers, authors, and others interested in the history of the Border Patrol and its involvement in enforcing our nations’ immigration law since the Border Patrol’s founding in 1924. A Federal law enacted by Congress allows the Border Patrol to donate documents, memorabilia, vehicles, and provide technical expertise to the Museum.

The Museum does not receive Federal funding, but relies on income from memberships, visitor donations, member and private donations, gift shop sales, and other funding activities sponsored by the Museum.

Full-Time Executive Director Primary Roles and Responsibilities

• Promotes the Museum’s mission through local community involvement, and represents the Museum with the City, County, and other civic leaders.

• Develops programs, community activities and hosts meetings with stakeholders, to further the mission of the Museum.

• Identifies grant opportunities and works to develop governmental nonprofit and foundations grants to support the mission of the Museum.

• Responsible for the appropriate monitoring and reporting of grants.

• Works with the Board of Governors and National Board of Trustees to ensure compliance with 501( C) ( 3) requirements.

• Responsible for strategic plan for operations of the museum as approved by the National Board of Trustees.

• Works with the National Board of Trustees for the development and approval of the annual budget.

• Works closely with the National Board of Trustees and Board of Governors for proper administration of all policies and operation of the Museum.

• Works with Border Patrol Headquarters and Sectors to obtain and store, for historical purposes, equipment, news articles, manuscripts, and memorabilia, pertinent to Border Patrol History.

• Provides oversight of the Collections Department to ensure proper cataloging, storage and safekeeping of equipment, documents and memorabilia received by the Museum.

• Ensures that all Museum memberships, donations, are properly recorded and kept up to date by the Collections Manager.

• Provides oversight of the Gift Shop Manager to ensure that rules relating to inventory control, storage and availability of merchandise and reporting requirements are followed to promote profitable gift shop sales.

• Provides oversight of the Business Manager to ensure that all expenses are paid promptly, that payroll is prepared timely, and all reporting requirements are followed. Also, the Business Manager helps prepare the yearly budget for presentation to the National Board of Trustees for approval.

• Ensures that the grounds and interior of the museum are well maintained.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

• At minimum a Bachelor’s degree in History, Art, Museum Studies, or in a related area.

• 3 to 5 years of work-related experience.

• Public relations and community relations skills.

• Supervisory leadership skills.

• Working knowledge of the Microsoft suite of programs and good social media skills.

• Good listener and receptive to the National Board of Trustees and Board of Governors ideas and recommendations.

• Especially important is the ability to write successful grants.

• Responsible for the direct supervision of the Museum staff of 4 to 6 full and part time employees

• If selected and does not have a working knowledge of the Border Patrol’s Mission and history, he/she will be expected to read and study relative materials to obtain that knowledge.

This is a full- time salaried position with a starting salary of from $60,000 to $65,000 based on experience. Benefits include paid medical, dental and vision insurance. 104 hours of Paid-Time Off (PTO) yearly, and sick leave at four hours per two weeks’ pay period. Sick leave hours can be carried over to the next year. The following paid holidays are Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and Thanksgiving Day. We will offer up to $1,000.00 in relocation assistance if needed.

Reporting Structure

The Border Patrol Museum Director works with its Board of Governors, and reports to the National Board of Trustees as required, for budget determination, operational plan changes, hiring of personnel, disciplinary actions if needed, salary adjustments, benefits, etc. .
