As a result, the majority of our staff are hybrid and work both from home and onsite. Our current hybrid approach requires staff to work onsite a minimum of two days each week, every Tuesday and one other day, to be determined by their business unit. Hybrid staff are also welcome to come in additional days each week or may be asked to come in on other days by their manager.

JOB OVERVIEW

The FRONTLINE Managing Director oversees all operational aspects of the PBS news and public affairs documentary series. This key leadership position is responsible for the day-to-day management of the series. It works closely with the Executive Producer to devise fundraising strategies and entrepreneurial ventures to sustain FRONTLINE’s status as a transmedia news organization. This senior management position is centralizing communications across the unit to keep staff informed, motivated, and focused on priorities and deadlines set for our programming and the varied content we produce across platforms.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Managing Director will be responsible for heading the series of business affairs, securing funding from philanthropic foundations, major donors, and corporations, fostering good business relations with co-production partners and editorial collaborators, administering the schedule of FRONTLINE’s monthly programming, working closely with our distribution arm to launch the select festival and theatrical releases and to broker co-production deals with foreign broadcasters, among other tasks. The Managing Director will be the key line of inquiry for staff questions about all aspects of the series—program rights, crediting, scheduling, distribution, branding, personnel issues, etc. The duties s/he will be charged with include:

Acting as a trusted partner to the executive producer on all operational aspects of the series management. Assuming a key leadership role for the series, work closely and effectively with people across many departments and organizations – building relationships inside and out of FRONTLINE is at the heart of the job.

Spearheading funding opportunities strategically through proposals and required reporting to PBS and CPB; collaborating with GBH departmental efforts to secure funding from foundations, major donors, and corporate underwriters; and devising innovative and entrepreneurial enterprises to financially support the series and its ambitions.

Strategize on fiscal planning and forecasting of the series budgets, as well as special projects and initiatives.

Negotiate budgets and contractual terms with key stakeholders –independent producers, co-production partners, funders, program talent, and vendors.

Lead operational collaborative editorial and promotional partnerships with national newspapers, magazines, broadcasters, public media organizations, including  NY Times, Washington Post , ProPublica, NPR,  Wall Street Journal , Associated Press, Univision, among others

Supervising and strategize with the executive producer on the scheduling for series programming in collaboration with PBS; drafting station advisories, compile monthly program listings, analyze program competition and rating trends, assign consumer research through an external marketing research firm.

Lead all internal and external communication matters, including crises; create short- and long-term plans for the series that can be easily presented, shared, and measured with the executive producer.

Serve as project manager for the festival and theatrical releases of select FRONTLINE films, including consulting and coordinating with distributors on budgeting, crediting, fundraising strategies, sponsored events, award ceremonies, team communications, etc.

Negotiating license and co-production deals with foreign broadcasters; work collaboratively with PBS Distribution to seek pre-sale opportunities and coordinate on packaging elements and marketing materials, including mounting online interactive screenings as a sales tool.

Assessing rights clearances and talent union obligations for expanded delivery of trans-media content. Key liaison with PBS about compliance issues and standards & practices (credits, funder approvals, etc.)

Overseeing hiring, training, professional development, and departmental organization; resolve HR issues; communicate PBS, CPB, and GBH policies to staff.

SKILL SET

Demonstrated experience in developing and directing entrepreneurial strategies within complex organizations. Ability to identify areas for growth, experimentation, and innovation.

A successful track record in securing funding from philanthropic foundations, major donors, government agencies, film associations, and corporate sponsors with established contacts within each sector.

Acumen for budget forecasting and planning, accounting principles, and budgetary compliance issues required by PBS, CPB, and funders. Accuracy and detail are paramount to success.

An accomplished negotiator who can broker deals that focus on the long-term relationship cultivated with co-production partners, funders, etc. Ability to present the series position on deal terms, to hold ground when necessary, and to mediate an equitable outcome for all parties.

A natural convener and organizer who can work across internal units and within GBH and PBS to gather information and advice as needed to complete assignments, initiate new ventures, and solve problems.

A perceptive, energetic individual who can affect change in a rapidly evolving and responsive environment. A self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset that can deliver results.

You have demonstrated the ability to manage resources and multiple projects simultaneously that are time-sensitive and can change with short notice.

Comfort with delegating assignments and voicing expectations for quality, timeliness, and accuracy.

Ability to influence and inspire others; must have a presence.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

A seasoned leader with at least 15+ years of leadership and project management experience and evaluation, preferably in news and documentary production. Familiarity with public media a plus.
