Position description

Chief, UCSF Division of Hospital Medicine at Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Medicine at the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) seeks an outstanding leader for its Division of Hospital Medicine (DHM). The mission of the Division of Hospital Medicine at ZSFG is to prevent and address health disparities through providing compassionate and evidence-based inpatient care, continuously examining and improving our own practices, and advocating for change to address longstanding biases in health care and society. Hospital Medicine is one of the department's newest divisions, founded with six faculty members in 2007.

In 2011, the vision expanded to 17 faculty members with the creation of the Faculty Inpatient Service, which directly cares for one-third of patients on the inpatient medicine service and provides support to many of the clinical services throughout ZSFG. Since 2011, the division has rapidly grown and now includes 39 faculty, 2 Nurse Practitioners, and 10 staff. The division provides the majority of staffing for the largest clinical inpatient service in the hospital. Additionally, the faculty have significant leadership and experience in medical education, research, and quality improvement. Jeff Critchfield, MD served as the Division Chief from 2007 - 2015 and Sumant Ranji, MD from 2016 - 2023.

Clinical services include the Resident and Faculty Inpatient Service, Medical Consult/Orthopedic Co-management Service, Addiction Care Team, the Supportive and Palliative Care Service, and Acute Care for Elders Unit. Successful business initiatives and grants have led to sustainable expansion of the clinical service lines listed above, one example being the Addiction Care Team. Since being founded in 2019, the Addiction Care Team has raised over $4M in grants and philanthropic efforts, treating over 16,000 patients between January 2019 and June 2023, often with homelessness (50%) and mental health diagnoses (40%).

The Division of Hospital Medicine at ZSFG has a long-standing tradition of world-class clinical and research training activities as core faculty for the UCSF medicine residency program. All hospital medicine faculty at ZSFG are employed by the UCSF School of Medicine. The faculty have been heavily engaged in undergraduate medical education through educational leadership roles, curriculum development, and mentorship. The ZSFG medicine clerkship, for which the Division's faculty comprise a majority of attendings, is highly rated in the School of Medicine. Additionally, the faculty have played a key role in the Internal Medicine Residency Program and across graduate medical education. They directly supervise medicine interns and residents who rotate on the Resident Inpatient Service. Many faculty have been recognized and/or inducted into the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators for their exceptional educational accomplishments.

The Division's researchers have developed successful programs in health services research and global health. Our co-directors of academic development and scholarships support and mentor other faculty to collaborate in research and publish in high impact journals. Inclusive of research funding, leadership and medical education roles, our faculty collectively has a funding proportion that is 55% clinical and 45% academic/leadership.

The Department of Medicine research programs at ZSFG receive over $100 million annually in funding. Research conducted at ZSFG has led to important breakthroughs in basic, clinical and systems research. The successful candidate will join the UCSF Department of Medicine (DOM) faculty and be included in the UCSF DOM compensation and benefits program.

We seek a Chief who has a demonstrated commitment to education, clinical practice, and research. The successful candidate must have the ability to lead a diverse group using a collaborative approach, demonstrated success in promoting or producing scholarship and funding, and a track record of mentoring young academic clinicians. Candidates must demonstrate exceptional leadership, administrative and organizational skills and have national stature in Hospital Medicine. An understanding of and commitment to the safety net population is also crucial. Board-certification in Internal Medicine is required.

Please apply online at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF04800 and submit a curriculum vitae, cover letter, statement of research, statement of contributions to diversity, and statement of teaching. Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $150,300-$320,100. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
