The Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) was founded in 1993 to bring together a collective voice among the diverse Asian and Pacific Islander communities to develop an alternative agenda for environmental, social and economic justice, and fight for the right of all people to a clean and healthy environment in which to live, work and play. In pursuit of this vision, APEN revolves around five strategies: building grassroots power, strengthening organizing capacity in API communities, forging strategic alliances, and advancing proactive agendas and policies towards systemic change.

Position Summary

The Managing Director is responsible for overseeing the organization’s internal management strategies, weaving information and building alignment amongst various leadership teams toward our strategic pathways. The Managing Director will facilitate inclusive and effective change management initiatives, and develop multi-pronged strategies that align APEN's infrastructure needs with the organization's culture and values. Working in close collaboration with the Co-Executive Directors and Management Team, this position will steward the strategic pathways, personnel policies, and operational standards for APEN and its sister c4 organization, APEN Action. The position is full-time exempt, will report to one of the Co-Executive Directors, and will supervise 3-4 mid and senior level staff.

Ideal candidates demonstrate the ability to lead and facilitate complex processes, and an appetite for courageous and clear decision-making. They will hold a principled and noncompetitive approach to organizational management and leadership. They will be entering the organization during a period of growth and expansion, and will be tasked with driving (or accelerating) the next phase of strategic planning (pathways).

Roles and Responsibilities

ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT & CULTURE

Oversee the organization’s management needs , Instilling resilience practices throughout the organization’s culture.

Facilitate cross-organizational Leadership:  includes collaboration standards, team development and culture building efforts, and other shared leadership initiatives that support the collective buy-in and ownership of the organization’s strategic plans.

Directs and oversees clear and equitable decision-making processes,  shepherding a culture of unity, collaboration, political clarity, and shared leadership.

Facilitates and builds culture:  develops opportunities for staff input, feedback and collaboration on processes and practices that maintain APEN’s values while advancing its strategic vision. Oversees internal organizational development consultants as needed.

ORGANIZATIONAL WEAVING & STRATEGY

Provide guidance and facilitate connection amongst APEN’s senior leadership structures , proactively weaving information amongst teams, providing clarity, and strategic direction

Provide oversight and develop internal planning strategies , in close collaboration with APEN’s leadership teams, including but not limited to:

All-staff meetings and bi-annual staff retreats

Bi-weekly leads team & management team meetings

Monthly Culture Collective team meetings

Team and individual work planning & budgeting

Implementing and managing org-wide initiatives

Develop and build processes to regularly assess APEN’s strategic pathways and planning needs , identifying the critical resources and management support required to accomplish campaign milestones. Ensure compliance between c3 and c4 entities are integrated into strategy and planning.

ORG-WIDE LEADERSHIP

Supports APEN’s Board with its priorities and implementation:  supports the Co-Executive Directors by overseeing the management or board processes and decision making as it impacts or requires staff input – this may include board recruitment and training, as well as staff engagement with the Board.

Basebuilding and Member Engagement: Support organizing events with APEN members

Fund Development:  Engage in grassroots and/or foundation fundraising

Communications: Act as a spokesperson and engage with communications narrative framework

Cross Component Support:  Support various areas of organizational work, events, or campaigns as identified and participate in organizational committees and teams as needed

Supervision:  Manage 3-4 staff

Qualifications

Minimum 7 years of experience in leadership, project management, operations, and/or administration, with a demonstrated commitment to racial justice, climate and environmental justice, and disability justice

Proven track record of managing strategies for organizations of similar complexity, size, and/or mission

Experience working with both 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 entities

Embodies self-confidence and the capacity to proactively create and independently move forward complex processes

Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with the ability to facilitate understanding across multiple audiences, including technical experts and policymakers

Ability to manage details, meet deadlines, and produce high-quality materials

People person and strong relationship-building skills

Supervision and management experience

Familiarity and experience with executive leadership in a 45+ person organization

Co-governing power and social justice organizing orientation: commitment to power-building, anti-racist and grassroots internationalism perspectives, and rooting campaign agenda and priorities from community members

Preferred Experience

Values APEN culture of team-building, creative facilitation, feminisms

Experience working with/in shared leadership models

Advanced facilitation or process-design skills

Management or Director-level experience with base-building and/or multi-region organizations

Salary And Benefits

Competitive salary range of $105,000 to $115,000, commensurate with experience. APEN also offers a generous benefits package that includes: health, dental and vision (domestic partner coverage available); health reimbursement arrangement; flexible spending account; commuter benefits; 5% 401k employer contribution; employee assistance program; professional development funds; paid parental leave; vacation and sick time; two-week paid winter break in December; one-week paid summer break; and an opportunity to qualify for a 3-month paid sabbatical. Accessibility And Working Conditions

This position will require applicants to work on a computer daily for long periods of time, and collaborate with staff through Zoom, email, and other digital platforms. APEN will provide a computer and other equipment needed to fulfill basic job responsibilities.

This position is based in the Bay Area, with hybrid remote/in-office expectations. Strong candidates based in Southern California may be considered.

In addition, this position will also follow APEN’s COVID safety policies and protocols regarding in-person work. Masks are required to be worn in APEN offices and indoor events, with the exception of eating and drinking. All employees also are required to be vaccinated as part of our safety policy or be subject to weekly testing.

APEN will continue to closely monitor local and state health officials guidance around COVID and any additional guidelines around safety for people to return to offices and gather in-person as needed.

This position may occasionally require work during irregular hours including on nights or weekends, and will require some travel between our APEN offices.

This position will not require applicants to carry or move heavy equipment or regularly ascend or descend a ladder. This position will not require working in hazardous or unusual conditions such as outdoors in inclement weather.
