Communications and Marketing Director

Alfred Street Baptist Church (ASBC) is excited to announce our search for our Director of Communications and Marketing . We are seeking a Director of Communications and Marketing to support our organization's communication efforts, facilitating increased visibility and influence with key external stakeholders. The Director will play a critical role in developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies, enhancing executive visibility, strengthening partnerships, and overseeing brand consistency and external communications, including website management. Day-to-day responsibilities include directing the following: media outreach, public relations, online and electronic communications, video, publications (print and digital), photography, our website and social media accounts.

The ideal candidate will be someone who is able to utilize best practices, and new technologies to continue to improve our communications systems. The Director will support efforts to engage with management, membership, and internal stakeholders. This is a full-time, exempt position which reports directly to the Church Administrator.

This role is based in Alexandria, VA on a hybrid basis. The role will be onsite 3 days per week. Weekend and evening work and travel will be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Branding, External Communications, and Website:

Oversee the organization's brand identity to maintain consistency and alignment across all communication channels.

Facilitate communication and collaboration with internal stakeholders to ensure brand integrity and achievement of organizational objectives including support of key events.

Manage the process of developing and updating external communications materials, including press releases, presentations, and marketing collateral, in collaboration with relevant internal teams.

Coordinate with internal stakeholders to develop and deliver presentations that effectively communicate our organization's goals, values, and achievements.

Oversee the organization's website, ensuring alignment with brand identity, content accuracy, and optimal user experience through regular updates and analytics tracking.

Strategy, Planning, and Media Relations:

Ensure consistent and relevant messaging and positioning across all external and internal communications

Oversee the strategic planning of social content across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and others

Work across multiple channels to represent and convey the organization's message through print, web, and multimedia in the organization’s style guide

Review all publications, including weekly e-blasts to members and other materials

Serve as the point of contact for all media:

Develop and manage public initiatives for major projects (i.e., building expansion, property acquisition, and issues related to community relations, parking, noise levels and events)

Management:

Recruit, develop, manage, and retain talent in the communications team.

Effectively communicate organizational priorities, strategic direction, and results with direct reports for continued commitment and active engagement.

Assess and improve the processes and systems within the department to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of department.

Select and manage agencies, consultants, and vendors.

Develop and manage budget to support the department’s plan.

CORE COMPENTENCIES:

5-7 years of communications experience—PR agency, non-profit, think tank or a corporate public relations office. Previous experience working with nonprofit organizations preferred

3+ years of people leadership experience, with a consistent track record of success managing and mentoring individuals (in-person and remotely) and developing high-performing teams.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited school

Proven track record of media relations experience

Highly organized. Must be self-driven and have excellent time management skills. You can move from drafting a rapid response press statement, to ensuring digital campaign components are designed and delivered on time, to tracking the budget for a communications project.

Ability to create and execute a successful content communication strategy

Background knowledge with digital platforms, such as: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X (Twitter)

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

Experience writing press releases, articles, advertisements and speeches

Ability to confidently communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing, with varying levels of staff, members, the media and is comfortable thinking on their feet

Ability to condense complex information from various sources into concise and user-friendly formats

Strategic skills and the ability to translate these skills into flawless operational plans, ensuring we have a competitive advantage and take advantage of best practices.

Highly collaborative style; commitment to work jointly with the following stakeholder groups: staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, vendors and other supporters.

Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and launching new initiatives.

Be able to establish and preserve connections with reporters, editors, and media organizations.

Ability to travel locally 10% of the time.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other technology systems.

Comfortable working for a faith-based organization.

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $120,000 – $150,000, commensurate with experience.
