School and Camp Programs Coordinator

Associate Director of The Everett Children’s Adventure Garden

Position Summary :

Develop and supervise implementation of innovative place-based outdoor science

curriculum (one-off and multi-visit) for visiting school groups as well as small site based

science day camp for prek-8 registered campers during school breaks and

summers.

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities :

+ Develop, plan and assess educational programs for visiting school groups and campers at the Children’s Adventure Garden. Includes multi-visit and one-off seasonal, thematic curriculum development for PreK and elementary school programs.

+ Research, source and manage school and camp supplies inventory.

+ Manage appropriate budgets and monthly ledgers.

+ Work with Adventure Garden Associate Director to hire and supervise seasonal educators, teen assistants and adult volunteers working with visiting school groups and NYBG science camps.

+ Train, schedule and supervise staff, volunteers and teen explainers to implement school and camp programs, with support of ECAG Associate Director and Explainer Coordinator.

+ Supervise Science Camp when in session, including communicating with parents, administering paperwork for medical waivers, photo releases, emergency contacts and drop-off/pick-up, covering staff breaks and implementing all necessary policies and procedures for camper safety, learning and fun.

+ Actively participate in multi-session Children’s Education Professional Learning series with colleagues across the department.

+ Provide on-site instruction for school groups and the visiting public as needed, modeling best inquiry-based outdoor science teaching practices for adult and adolescent staff and volunteers.

+ Supervise 12 acre indoor and outdoor educational facilities as necessary on weekday and weekends/evenings as needed.

+ Support the maintenance of a teaching collection of plants in a greenhouse with other ECAG staff.

Qualifications :

+ Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Education, Museum Studies or a related area.

+ Seasoned outdoor science educator with experience directly teaching formal and informal programs for school and OST groups. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including writing engaging developmentally appropriate science curriculum.

+ Experience mentoring and supervising educators and adult and teen volunteers.

+ Team player, creative, organization skills required.

+ Understanding of school systems and city, state and national standards preferred.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to , at minimum , stand, walk, sit, use hands, climb ladders, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must be able to life and/or move up to 25 pounds and work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions.

Baseline Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm

Salary is commensurate with experience within $56,700- $63,000.
