1. In a few words, tell us about your Second Home Journey and how you got to your current role.
Landing at Second Home was honestly a bit serendipitous! I was taking some time out after leaving my previous company, and me & my partner were having a discussion about what would be my ideal next move. Second Home was my first choice – I had followed the brand for a while and had always been drawn to it – its culture shone through its social media, super diverse, incredible cultural programming, and it was one of the first workspaces in the UK to become a B-Corp. Within a week of that conversation with my partner, a recruiter reached out to me with an opportunity at Second Home that perfectly mirrored my prior role – it was meant to be. Needless to say, I applied and am absolutely over the moon to be here now!
2. What do you think makes a good leader?
Be authentic and adaptable to change. Listen, be curious and completely open to learning from others around you, especially your own team. Care deeply but don’t be afraid to make tough calls. Put everything into empowering the people you lead, teach them everything you know. Most importantly, work out what they want to do / achieve in life and do everything within your power to help them get there.
3. How does it feel that 50% of our workforce are strong independent women?
As a queer woman, the significance of equal representation, particularly in leadership roles, cannot be overstated for me. Having such a diverse and inclusive workforce is an absolute asset to the business and is an encouraging sign for all young people who are looking to grow in their careers, as it shows that opportunities do exist and that your identity is not a barrier to success at Second Home.
4. If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self when they first started at Second Home?
Keep an open mind, don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo, and be willing to pivot when the situation calls for it. Oh, and don’t rush those WiFi upgrades…
