Position description

LGR Head of Biology

Assistant/Associate Adjunct Professor, Biochemistry & Biophysics

About the LGR

The Laboratory for Genomics Research (LGR) is a novel hybrid model that brings together researchers from UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, and GSK under one roof in an immersive collaborative R&D environment to discover and validate novel therapeutic targets and bring better medicines faster to patients with unmet medical needs. The LGR team is focused on developing and implementing advanced CRISPR-based genome editing and functional genomics platforms empowered by human genetics and computational biology to discover drug targets with high probability of success, decipher biological functions of genes in the context of disease through mechanistic investigation into previously unknown genes and their networks, and deliver innovative research tools and technologies that are optimized and scalable for both academic and drug discovery research labs across the partner institutes.

Narrative (Responsibilities):

Lead the LGR Biology Team in collaboration with Technology and Computational Teams to develop state-of-the-art pooled and arrayed CRISPR screening platforms employing high-dimensional functional assays based on Perturb-seq, high-content cell imaging, flow cytometry and other omics technologies

Generate innovative new cell-based models and disease-relevant assays for use in next-generation functional genomics screening platforms as principal investigator in collaborative projects with academic and industry partners across UCSF, UC Berkeley, and GSK

Manage and oversee genetic engineering and validation of new cell lines containing functional CRISPR machinery, reporter constructs, and disease-relevant mutations and deletions and maintain stocks for use in the LGR and among collaborators

Work with Technology Team to implement and validate strategies to design and deploy optimized and refined sgRNA libraries and new types of CRISPR modalities developed at the LGR

Implement scalable disease-relevant phenotypic assays and readouts and translate those assays to automated laboratory equipment in collaboration with automation team

Mentor and coach the Team composed of scientists and engineers of varying levels of experience and education (both PhD and BS) for sustained research productivity and professional development

Present research results to internal and external audiences including the LGR Joint Steering Committee and CRISPR scientific community through publication in peer-reviewed journals and academic conferences

Required Qualifications:

PhD or doctoral degree in Biological Sciences, Genetics, Chemical Biology, Biological Engineering, or related field

Supervisory experience in leading a team of scientists

Outstanding project management skills demonstrated through collaborative projects across organizational and functional boundaries

Strong written and verbal communication skills demonstrated by publication of research papers and conference presentations

Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise in a combination of two or more of the following technology areas:

A background in biology. This could include implementation of complex disease-relevant cellular models such as iPSC-derived cells, primary cells, organoids, and related tissues.

Knowledge of or experience in high-throughput screening. This could broadly include single cell omics, microscopy-based imaging assays, spatial transcriptomics, and small molecule screening.

Working knowledge in CRISPR genome editing and functional genomics including large-scale CRISPR screens

Hands-on or supervisory experience in assay development and implementing standard operating protocols involving cell or molecular biology in the context of automated high throughput screening platforms

Familiarity with lab automation, project management software, ELNs, and LIMS

2+ years experience in industry, preferably in a startup environment, with experience managing PhD level individual contributors
