Under the direction of the Vice President of Diagnostic and Support Services and the Laboratory Medical Director, the Laboratory Director coordinates and is fully accountable for all daily laboratory activities including management of staff, insuring all hospital and department policies and procedures are followed, overseeing contracts with vendors involving equipment and products, and assuring the laboratory is reporting results in an accurate and timely manner. In addition, this person must also provide input and support to hospital wide committees and strategic objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

A. Employee Management

1. Supports, encourages, and contributes to the professional growth of all department staff members

2. Selects staff that will represent the values and maintain the standards of behavior of hospital

3. Develops and implements job descriptions and performance standards

4. Evaluates staff performance

5. Ensures that staff is in compliance with licensure and other annual mandatory requirements

B. Laboratory Management

1. Responsible for all laboratory equipment

2. Responsible for the scheduling, performance, and reporting of laboratory tests

3. Responsible for the management of outreach programs and/or offsite laboratories

4. Oversees contracts involving the laboratory equipment and services

5. Accountable for unit productivity

C. Budget

1. Develops and recommends department operating and capital budgets

2. Prepares and manages FTE budget including developing staffing plans

3. Ensures that the department operates within budget

4. Develops and utilizes the budget as a planning and control tool

D. Customer Service

1. Interacts with all customers to ensure prompt and accurate communication to provide the service expected and to meet the goals of the service

2. Responsible for the continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided

E. Procedures and Regulations

1. Responsible for laboratory certification from all applicable inspection agencies

2. Directs the evaluation of new test methods

3. Develops and implements departmental goals and objectives with input from staff members

4. Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of service

5. Develops departmental strategic objectives and new programs

Non-Essential Duties :

• Adds support to other Laboratory staff as needed during high volume, emergency, or short staffed situations

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Demonstrated knowledge of departmental and hospital policies and procedures that support the provision of service

• Demonstrated knowledge in identifying and selecting new staff and evaluating staff performance

• Demonstrated knowledge of how laboratory results apply and affect the care and treatment of patients

• Demonstrated knowledge of laws, regulations and technical standards

• Demonstrated knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups and proficiency in these areas

• Demonstrates knowledge of administrative and personnel policies and procedures and understands correct labor relations management

Skills

• Strong analytical and problem solving skills

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

Abilities

• Ability to develop department goals and objectives

• Ability to lead by example and serve as a professional role model

• Ability to operate Hospital and Laboratory Information Systems

• Ability to use the budget to analyze staffing, productivity, and future objectives

• Ability to exhibit courteous, helpful and professional behavior in dealing with patients, public and peers

• Ability to oversee all aspects of the laboratory
