Who we are
The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Director, Corporate Finance, the Senior Manager, Finance & Accounting is responsible to lead and manage Corporate financial reporting, Market financial reporting and payroll. The role will lead the external audit engagements and the delivery of audited financial statements, compliance with tax, regulatory, government and legal requirements with appropriate and prudent risk management practices; policies and procedures in support of payroll and accounting. Lead the above functions to ensure stakeholders, Executive Leadership Team, Audit Committee and Board of Director members, market participants and governments receive complete and accurate information for decisions making. Lead a team of 11 through 3 direct reports across the Corporate, Market and Payroll teams to deliver on their objectives.
What you’ll do
Be accountable, manage, and responsible for:
Developing timely and accurate corporate and market statutory financial statements on a quarterly and annual basis
Managing external auditing engagements and internal audit engagements related to Corporate accounting, Market accounting and Payroll.
Managing all of the IESO financial reconciliations (including sub-ledgers and tools) and taxation reconciliations (HST, Income, payroll source deductions) that support the IESO’s accurate financial position and external reporting
Ensuring efficient and accurate financial reporting including preparing accurate reports and analyses
Communicating on finance related matters directly with external stakeholders including the Ontario Energy Board, Ontario Auditor General, Canada Revenue Agency, and IESO market participants;
Managing or assisting in projects that deliver financial efficiencies (e.g. processes, procedures), implements new finance initiatives, and/or new finance tools;
Having up to date expert technical knowledge regarding Public Sector Accounting Standards accounting, financial internal controls, taxation (HST excise, payroll), and Canadian payroll standards;
Managing the monthly publication of IESO market invoices to market participants;
Implementing appropriate internal controls including recommendations for streamlining processes and best practices.
Deal with routine and complex personnel matters including collective bargaining matters
Self-initiate recommendations to management regarding personnel, personnel tools, and long-term development
Champion and lead the group on ensuring staff have personal development actions and on raising employee engagement
Champion and link the group’s activities to the IESO’s Values and Core Strategies
Develop and recommend to senior management initiatives around the group’s strategies, efficiencies, evolution of work efforts, and internal controls.
Identify, evolve and monitor the group’s key risks and trends complete with mitigation plans – to assist the Director and CFO.
Accurate and timely payroll deposit delivery, payroll accounting, and submissions of payroll source deductions;
Participate in support of collective agreement bargaining, helping identify and assess the impact of changes and providing effective recommendations to guide decision-makers conducting negotiations.
Support Human Resources in labour relations and other issues through ad-hoc financial analysis.
Issue Market invoices and interpret market rules regarding financial matters
Provide financial expertise regarding Market disputes
Accurate taxation treatment including HST excise and taxation reporting
Manage projects including overseeing project staff and project reporting
Establish and update finance policies and procedures that are utilized and necessary for a full finance function
Provide support as necessary to the Financial Planning & Analysis and Treasury team.
Assist in designing and preparing presentations and ad hoc analysis for senior management, Audit Committee. Board of Directors and government agencies in support of projects or initiatives
Perform other duties and participate on special projects as may be required
Maintain an awareness of the latest developments in emerging accounting and financial issues.
What you need to succeed
Undergraduate degree in business, accounting, finance or economics
A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
Minimum 10 years of business experience including a) leading financial statement preparation and reporting, b) expert accounting and Public Sector Accounting Standards knowledge c) leading audits and managing external independent auditors; and d) projects that implemented accounting systems and tools
Experience in the development and application of financial policies and payroll processes
Strong interpersonal, change management and communication skills with an ability to work closely with the Executive Leadership Team, Audit Committee and Board of Directors
Demonstrated leadership skills and an ability to influence and motivate others to work collaboratively as team members.
Rigorous analytical and organizational skills; able to use trouble shooting techniques to solve solutions or devise new courses of action within the intent of existing programs, legislation or professional standards
Requires supervisory experience to exercise full managerial accountabilities including human resource management in the areas of employee engagement and development, succession planning, performance management, salary recommendations, coaching and mentoring.
Other experience that would be helpful, although not essential, includes knowledge and understanding of the design of the IESO-administered markets, and a broad understanding of the electricity industry in general.

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario . When working in the office, you will be located at our Mississauga, Toronto, or Oakville location.
