Job Summary

A Research Assistant/Research Associate position is available to study genetic models of human disease at the UCSF School of Medicine in San Francisco. Our lab uses cell biological and genetic approaches to study diseases as diverse as ocular development, hemorrhagic stroke, muscular dystrophy and brain development. The overall goal of our research is to identify molecular mechanisms underlying a novel connective tissue disorder that may be targeted with therapeutic interventions. The successful candidate will assist laboratory research by providing technical assistance, preparing and arranging reagents, ordering and inventory of stocks and maintenance of an extensive research database for animal husbandry.

The successful candidate will be responsible for animal husbandry including careful maintenance of a colony-tracking database, be responsible for general lab organization including organizing and maintaining inventories of stocks and reagents, and contribute technical assistance to scientists working on genetic models of cerebral cortical development and muscular dystrophy.

Techniques may include, but are not limited to: basic molecular biology, biochemistry, cell culturing, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy. The Research Assistant/Research Associate will work under the direct supervision of a postdoctoral fellow. There may be opportunities for co-authorship of manuscripts if the individual is motivated and exerts extra effort.

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is one of the leading ophthalmology departments in clinical care, training, and research nationwide. The Department of Ophthalmology is one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments. We are ranked 2 nd in overall National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in the country. Additionally, we have been the #1 recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness funding nationwide with nearly $1.2 million granted in a single year. Overall, the Department has a wide-ranging portfolio of 60 active research grants.

UCSF's renowned eye care services is located in a state-of-the-art home, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision ( WGVCV) . Located at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus, the center houses the Vision Clinics, where many of UCSF's eye care programs relocated, as well as research and teaching facilities. Ophthalmology conducts its patient care, teaching, research, and public service activities currently at multiple UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran's Administration Medical Center (VAMC), San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), East Bay and Benioff Children's Hospital at Mission Bay and in Oakland. The Department sponsors numerous invited speakers, research seminars, journal clubs, as well as a postdoctoral training program focused on mentorship, networking, and recognition. The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology consists of approximately 300 full time employees (FTE's) (including UCSF Health employees), including faculty, basic scientists, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, residents, fellows, clinical, research and administrative staff.

Required Qualifications

SRA I:

BA/BS/BSc degree in Molecular and Cell Biology or related biological science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must be efficient and organized with meticulous record keeping skills.

Lab skills including PCR, qPCR, westerns and immunohistochemistry, histopathology and microscopy.

Must have strong communication skills, computer skills, be highly motivated and work well as a team or independently.

Ability to work independently and effectively after receiving instruction, while managing and prioritizing multiple projects.

SRA II: In addition to the above, one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Cell and molecular biology experience as obtained in school.
