Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor of History - World History
The Department of History at Pacific Lutheran University invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position for one academic year – September 1, 2024 through May 31, 2025. The position will teach lower-division World History surveys and special topics courses in areas of expertise, to be designed in consultation with the department. Courses in Central or South American history, or another geographic focus, such as African history or South Asian history, would be particularly welcome. In addition, one course will be a first-year experience writing course.
This position requires commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate students. We especially encourage applicants with dynamic and inclusive pedagogical approaches and who are open to feedback and growth. A commitment to supporting the success of students from diverse backgrounds is essential. The successful candidate will have teaching experience in post-secondary education and demonstrate familiarity with creative approaches to teaching World History.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: : Teach six (6) courses over the academic year (2 during fall semester, 1 during January-term, and 3 during spring semester), and hold regular student hours.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Commitment to effective and inclusive teaching and learning strategies.
Ability to teach lower-division Modern World History surveys and other lower- and upper-division classes in Central or South American history or other geographic focus, such as African history or South Asian history.
Ability to teach first-year writing course.
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. must be in hand by September 1, 2024 for appointment at the Visiting Assistant Professor level. ABD required by September 1, 2024 for appointment at the Instructor level.
Teaching experience in History, at the post-secondary level.
Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in History, or a closely-related discipline.
