Description: Direct a nationally recognized program of research in the Investigator's area of special expertise by designing and implementing major health related research projects; developing, evaluating, and testing significant innovations in the organization, delivery, and financing of health care; publishing research findings in major scientific and professional journals and books; translating research into practice, leading national and/or local research cooperatives, mentoring the career development of junior investigators, stimulating and guiding the overall development of the Center for Health Research (CHR) as a preeminent research institution; and advising Kaiser Permanente (KP) and local, state and national policy-makers in the Investigator's area of expertise.Essential Responsibilities:Direct, develop, design, lead and obtain funding for an extensive ongoing research program comprising multiple, coordinated research, demonstration, and/or evaluation projects in the Distinguished investigator's area of particular expertise in order to advance knowledge that will improve health and health care delivery. Lead collaborative research programs across multiple institutions. Be recognized as a national/international leader in research specialty area, including Principal Investigator of major research municate research results to other scientists, clinicians, professional groups, the community, and the media.Work with partners in the health care system to improve the health of Kaiser Permanente and/or non-Kaiser Permanente members. This includes providing scientific and health policy leadership in a defined area of expertise deriving from the distinguished investigator's research program; working with policy makers, KP providers and managers, and others in the health care field and related contexts.Provide technical consulting and professional service to KP, assume major responsibility for demonstration projects in the special interest of KP, and serve on relevant KP committees and task forces.Promote a positive science-focused work culture by assisting in the development of Center policy, providing technical services and consultation to other CHR staff by helping to define the CHR's future research agenda, and by maintaining security and confidentiality of research and medical data.Mentor investigators in identifying the key social and health policy issues and derive a research agenda to generate solutions to these challenges.Foster development of collaborations among investigators within and across institutions; stimulate development of new proposals and manuscripts for publication.Guide and shape individual scientific agendas to fit with the overall goals of the Center and help develop research opportunities.Provide service to the professional and scientific community through membership on scientific peer review groups and national policy and advisory boards and/or serve as an editor or member of the editorial board of a scientific peer-reviewed publication; participate in (inter)national collaborative studies; and consult with local, state, and national voluntary and governmental agencies. Basic Qualifications:ExperienceMinimum thirteen (13) years of experience as Investigator (or equivalent such as Assistant or Associate Professor)EducationDoctoral degree in epidemiology, behavioral science, health services research, or related field, or doctoral degree in medicine with additional research education and trainingLicense, Certification, RegistrationN/AAdditional Requirements:Distinguished investigators from the academic fields typically hold membership in their respective professional/scientific associations.Distinguished investigators from health care fields typically hold licenses in their respective professions (e.g., M.D., D.D.S., R. Pharm., R.N.).Thorough knowledge of quantitative methods (from mathematics and statistics) for dealing with methodological and analytic problems in the Distinguished investigator's substantive area of expertise (e.g., epidemiology, sociology, economics).Comprehensive knowledge of health care organization, policy, practice, and managementAbility to build and supervise a team of research analysts, assistants, and other project staff to accomplish project tasks in a timely and efficient mannerAbility to work in a computerized work environment, including word, web technology and data processingScientific writing skills; ability to write and communicate effectively to scientific/technical audiencesResearch methods and theory in health research related discipline; data analysis and interpretation skills, substantive knowledge in health-related disciplineExceptional leadership skills as evidenced by several years experience overseeing complex research projects including supervision of scientific and administrative staffDemonstrated ability to establish a strong, ongoing line of research as Principal Investigator with continuing and current external grant funding, typically from peer-review research grants and including competing renewal grants or the equivalent.Presentations of research findings at national or international meetings as presenting or senior author.At least fifty (50) articles in peer-reviewed journals (more than ten (10) first-authored); at least twenty (20) articles will have been published within the last ten (10) years.Experience serving on internal departmental committees; provide consultation to top level regional and inter-regional managers and committees.Experience in organizing and transmitting the knowledge of their disciplines, such as teaching at the college or university level, reviewing papers for indexed peer review journals, or serving on an editorial board for a peer review journalDemonstrated ability in establishing national and/or international reputation as a leading researcher in the individual's specialty field as evidenced by leadership role on national expert panels and grant review committees and any of the following: publications in national and international, peer-reviewed scientific journals, presentations of research findings at national or international meetings, recommendations from at least three nationally or internationally recognized experts in Investigator's area of expertise.Preferred Qualifications:Experience working in or with a health maintenance prehensive knowledge of health care organization, policy, practice, and management.Excellent administrative skills for dealing with large, complex projectsExcellent partnership skills, including communications and negotiationsOutstanding ability to write and communicate effectively to scientific/technical audiences, as well as clinical and lay audiences Note:Infectious Disease, Cancer, Social Determinants, or Implementation Science Experience Strongly Preferred.
