We are looking for a Director of Safety whose approach, passion and experience can continue to elevate our Safety Department and practices that reflect the mission, values and culture of Painters USA. Painters USA has a 200+ field team and completes nearly $50M in projects annually in multiple states.
The Director of Safety will be responsible to establish, develop and grow a culture of safety throughout the company. The individual will also provide technical and compliance expertise to the organization, and specifically to field employees on good safety habits, manage the day-to-day department operations in support of safety for each of the company’s line of business units. The Director of Safety will lead and ensure propr incident management and return to work efforts through cross-departmental collaboration, to meet organizational objectives.
The Director of Safety at Painters USA will play a pivotal role in ensuring the highest standards of safety across all aspects of our operations; we strive to not only lead the industry in safety practices but to also be an example for others to emulate. With a strong emphasis on field engagement and significant travel requirements, the Director will oversee the observation, monitoring, auditing, and management of safety behaviors and compliance. They will be responsible for managing robust customer relations among customer safety executives and corporate entities, ensuring alignment with our safety protocols and jobsite practices.
This role requires expertise in safety plan design, policy formulation, program coordination, implementation, continuous monitoring and assessment to achieve a best-in-class safety culture and outcomes.
The Safety Director will lead the Safety Team at Painters USA: Safety Manager, Regional Safety Specialist and Safety Administrator.
Basic Qualifications
Minimum of 5 years of experience in safety leadership and management in commercial and/or industrial construction
Successful record of continued learning in safety, leadership, or related field
Expert-level proficiency in regulatory compliance and safety standards
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Certifications: OSHA 500 (preferred, expected within 6 months from date of hire), active Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or equivalent
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software to prepare reports, permits, and training records
Willingness to travel (60% field, 40% office) and engage regularly in field activities
Desired Qualifications Demonstrated success in managing safety programs and initiatives
Strong experience in managing cross-departmental collaboration to plan for and achieve success, overcome challenges and meet objectives
Familiar with, and champion of, safety software and data analysis tools (GotSafety, iAuditor)
Preferred certifications include: MEWP train the trainer, scaffold/swing stage trainer, confined space trainer, fit testing administrator, lead abatement trainer
Performance Responsibilities Enhances the organization’s safety operations by establishing best practices in policies, procedures and compliance; resulting in a best-in-class safety department, safety programs and safety outcomes, through collaboration, education and engagement
Develop, establish, implement, mobilize, monitor, assess and continuously improve a best-in-class safety culture
Champion a safety culture that is highly engaged, educated and committed (10 Core Safety Beliefs and 5 Critical Life Rules)
Lead the development, activation, implementation and monitoring of new programs, policies and/or trainings
Conduct safety observations / audits at project sites to ensure consistent safety adherence
Lead the incident management and return to work program, in strong collaboration with HR; including investigation of recordable and near-miss accidents, injuries, or occupational incidents to determine root causes and preventative measures.
Embrace vendor partnerships to ensure optimal outcomes and collaboration (Gallagher Basset, Acrisure, et.)
Leads the Safety Team to understand, execute, plan and monitor the department’s safety strategy and objectives; in alignment with the organization’s objectives, values and culture Drive and support strong collaboration with the management team, bringing the safety perspective to the forefront and ensuring company-wide commitment
Manage relationships with safety executives and corporate partners to align safety initiatives and goals
Annual department planning, and objective monitoring to meet organization vision, mission and objectives; including department budget planning and monitoring
The safety subject matter expert to the Safety Team, organizational leadership, people managers and all employees As the subject matter expert, serve as a teacher among the organization, and within teams, to continually build a strong culture of safety throughout the organization
Conduct the annual safety survey, analyze findings, and implement action steps to address identified risks and hazards
Monitor and report on safety performance metrics, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions EMR Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR)

Maintain compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and regulations and recommended best practices for organization compliance and growth as well as customer requirements Ensure completion of all OSHA required annual safety trainings

Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory requirements and changes, new technologies, new risks and new opportunities workplace safety; recommending changes when appropriate

Listen to, and consider, all employee suggestions for achieving a safer, healthier workplace.
Remain informed about workplace safety and health hazards, and regularly review the company safety and health programs.
Physical Requirements Ability to travel extensively, sometimes on short notice.
Must be able to conduct field observations and inspections, which may require standing, walking, and climbing.
Capability to lift and carry equipment as needed for safety assessments and audits.
Comfortable working in various environmental conditions, including indoor and outdoor settings.
