Receives and dispatches requests for police, fire, and animal control emergency and non-emergency services. Also provides Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) services.

***Lateral applicants are eligible for a starting salary based on whole years of Communications Officer experience. The starting salary with a minimum of 5+ years of Communications Officer experience is $63,523.20**

Examples of Duties

WORK ACTIVITIES:

Operates a multi-line communication system. Answers phone lines without delay. Uses good judgment when creating calls for service. Provides professional customer service to citizens and other agencies. Screens calls and forwards callers to others correctly. Prioritizes phone operations appropriately.

Collects vital information from callers quickly and accurately. Utilizes EMD Pro-QA appropriately. Provides pre-arrival instructions confidently. Remains calm. Takes control of calls using techniques such as repetitive persistence and voice control. Operates TTY and 911-Text effectively.

Monitors and broadcasts information on a multichannel radio system. Coordinates the assignment of units. Actively listens to radio traffic. Enunciates clearly. Limited use of radio playback device. Responds to radio transmissions with professionalism. Utilizes echo dispatching radio techniques appropriately.

Retrieves and interprets returns from the TLETS system properly. Identifies notifications of stolen or wanted entries. Provides information from TLETS without delay. Responds appropriately to unexpected, wanted returns initiated from MDC requests. Enters warrants and other NCIC items without delay. Clears or cancels entries as needed. Forwards documentation from TLETS activity to appropriate recipients.

Adheres to flexible scheduling. Accepts on-call assignments. Coordinates time-off requests with the needs of other team members. Must report to work as scheduled.

Assists other employees as needed.

Adheres to personnel safety, departmental policies and procedures, and administrative orders.

Follows appropriate chain of command when applicable as provided in Town and department policies.

Informs supervisor of all work activities.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must train, test, and certify as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) per Priority Dispatch standards.

Must have a valid state-issued driver's license and driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.

EDUCATION: Telecommunications Certification as issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education is preferred.

Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification as issued by the International Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch is preferred.

W ORK EXPERIENCE: Six (6) months or more of municipal Police, Fire, and 911 enhanced dispatching experience is preferred.

Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history).

Desired Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES: Must possess a basic knowledge of computer operations, stressing accuracy, and speed; knowledge of proper English usage; and good office administration and organization skills.

Bilingual skills are preferred.

Must be able to be certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as a Telecommunicator.

Must be able to make quick and competent decisions in all activities.

Must be able to perform under stress when confronted with emergency, critical, or dangerous situations.

Must be able to perform a variety of tasks, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.

Must be able to work without constant supervision.

Must be able to work in a team setting and foster a cooperative working environment which maintains a positive image of the department and promotes harmonious relations among employees or between employees and the public.

Must courteously assist citizens, the general public, and employees with situations that are frequently complicated or serious in nature.

Must maintain confidentiality with criminal and investigative information.

Must concentrate on assigned tasks through many distractions.

MUST WORK FLEXIBLE HOURS TO INCLUDE ALL SHIFTS; NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS AND ACCEPT ON-CALL DUTY STATUS.
