Job Summary

Provides supervision to rehabilitation staff including therapists in any rehabilitation discipline (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, audiology). May also include supervision of rehabilitation support staff. Oversees employees, ensures compliance, enforces policies and procedures, and schedules staff. Supervises and unit / departments efficiency, productivity and performance; resolves or escalates daily clinical, program and operational issues.

The Clinical Supervisor reports to the Rehab Services Manager and serves as the supervisor for outpatient rehabilitation, and the Physical Therapy Faculty Practice. The Clinical Supervisor is directly responsible for evaluating and assuring the quality of work performed meets departmental, organizational, professional, and regulatory standards. As such, the Clinical Supervisor is a recognized expert and source of knowledge in the field of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitative Services and serves as the immediate supervisor of all staff and students.

The Clinical Supervisor independently performs routine and complex patient evaluations and therapeutic interventions within the scope of clinical practice. In addition, the Clinical Supervisor serves as a consultant to staff, students and other medical professionals in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation patient evaluations, therapeutic intervention planning or intervention across the array of services provided. While performing job duties, the Clinical Supervisor may also supervise support personnel as allowed by discipline specific State Practice Acts including Therapy Assistants and Rehabilitation Aides, practice coordinators, as well as trainees, interns, residents, and students. The Clinical Supervisor works primarily with adolescent, adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, and may work with pediatric patients.

As a member of the Leadership Team, the Clinical Supervisor works with the other Clinical Supervisors, the Rehab Services Manager, Ambulatory Administration Practice Supervisor, Rehabilitation Services, and Department of Physical Therapy leadership and other stakeholders to make recommendations for and plan implementation of any changes in patient care procedures, protocols or programs provided by the clinical enterprise. The Clinical Supervisor leads staff development and staff engagement activities, including annual performance evaluations, for all rehab staff within the clinical settings covered. The Clinical Supervisor makes recommendations for staffing guidelines, supply and equipment needs required to meet the needs of patients served at the clinical settings covered.

The Clinical Supervisor is responsible for actively supporting initiatives to further the Mission of UCSF, including participation in Lean process improvement activities, UCSF Health Department committees and workgroups, and clinical education programs at UCSF and in the community.

Department Description

The Department of Rehabilitative Services at UCSF Health provides Occupational, Physical and Speech/Dysphagia Therapy for adult inpatients at UCSF Hellen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights; Pediatric inpatients, acute rehabilitation patients and outpatients at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and Sports Medicine Center for Young Athletes; and Adult outpatient physical therapy and rehabilitative services at multiple Physical Therapy Faculty Practice locations, and several embedded interdisciplinary clinics.

Rehabilitative Services utilizes our organizational mission - Caring, Healing, Teaching and Discovering - as the focus in establishing its purpose and goals. In keeping with the mission and values of UCSF Medical Center, the purpose of our department is to provide and/or facilitate high quality, comprehensive, cost-effective and efficient physical and cognitive rehabilitation services to our patients across the health care continuum. The staff and rehab professionals of our department work individually and collaboratively to serve this purpose while retaining the humanity of our care and promoting each person's achievement of an optimal level of function within the best of our abilities and the resources that are available.

The Outpatient Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Clinics at UCSF Medical Center offers services to patients of all ages who suffer from movement dysfunction. Our goal is to help patients recover maximum function, while supporting the academic mission of the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Demonstrates subject matter knowledge of rehabilitation (OT/SLP) service. Ability to apply principles to designated setting to ensure operations meet regulatory standards.

Minimum of five (5) years of general outpatient care experience.

Minimum of one (1) year of prior experience as a Supervisor or Clinical Leadership.

Minimum 150 Hours of related clinical and/or professional coursework including lecture/lab.

Solid knowledge of medical center, HR and UC policies and processes. Knowledge and ability to monitor compliance with relevant rehabilitation patient care / equipment management federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Demonstrated leadership skills in training, mentoring and guiding employees in Physical Therapy rehabilitation service techniques. Motivates and inspires staff to improve patient care services. Actively cooperates and supports the work of others.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.

Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with assigned staff, patients, and interdisciplinary team members as part of the rehabilitation patient care plan.

Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with patients and members of the healthcare team across the continuum of care. Skills to actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel.

Preferred Qualifications

Licensed in California as a Occupational Therapist or Speech Language Pathologist.

Board certification in a clinical specialty practice area.

Master's or Doctorate degree in related field.

Prior clinical and/or leadership experience in an academic medical center.

Ability to organize assigned staff and unit operations in an efficient and effective manner.

Prior experience working in an interdisciplinary health provider team setting.

Prior experience as a clinical instructor and teaching to a variety of audiences.

Knowledge of organization's patient care documentation technology to teach others, recommend and oversee improvements and troubleshoot issues.

Prior experience with Epic clinical documentation, billing, and scheduling tools.

License/Certification

Licensed in related rehabilitation service: Occupational Therapy or Speech Language Pathologist.

Current Certification in Basic Life Support provisioned by the American Heart Association.
