Position Overview: We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Controller to join our team in Washington, DC. This role is ideal for an Assistant Controller ready to advance into a Controller position or an Accounting Manager looking to transition into a Controller role within the non-profit sector.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee all aspects of the organization’s accounting functions, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
Manage month-end and year-end close processes, including financial statement preparation and analysis.
Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard financial assets.
Coordinate and collaborate with external auditors during annual audits and tax filings.
Monitor and analyze financial performance against budget, providing insights and recommendations to senior management.
Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
Prepare financial reports for the Board of Directors and senior leadership, highlighting key metrics and financial health indicators.
Stay updated on accounting regulations and best practices within the non-profit sector, ensuring organizational compliance.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA certification strongly preferred
8 - 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 4+ years in a supervisory or managerial role.
4+ years experience in a non-profit organization required ; familiarity with fund accounting principles and reporting requirements
Grants accounting experience is a necessity: restricted funds and unrestricted funds.
Proven ability to lead and develop a team, promoting collaboration and high performance.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide strategic insights.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite) and advanced Excel skills.
