The UW Compensation Office is a functional unit within HR that provides compensation and classification expertise to departments of the UW.
Reporting to the Manager, Campus Compensation, this position has responsibility for reviewing and evaluating classified and professional staff positions to ensure alignment and compliance with applicable classification and compensation standards. This position will exercise discretion and independent judgment in effecting, executing, and discharging various aspects of the compensation and classification function for assigned business units. Primarily focused on providing professional level support, the Compensation Specialist will provide initial review and conduct preliminary research to expedite position and requisition reviews for compensation consultants. Additionally, this position will be independently responsible for routine classification reviews and compensation related actions for temporary professional staff positions and/or classified staff positions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Review Create Position, Edit Position Restriction and other requests in Workday for completeness; research and proactively resolve errors, seek out missing information, identify requisitions that may need to go through labor relations review, and facilitate the review process in coordination with the Campus Compensation Consultants. (45%)
Perform intake of all position review requests received for Campus Compensation team. Review for completeness, seek out missing information, and research and proactively resolve errors. Accurately enter information into review tracking database and distribute reviews to Compensation Consultants in a timely manner. Receive completed requests, send notifications, finalize database entry for implementation, and file review packets per guidelines. (30%)
Evaluate and approve or deny routine classification or compensation requests including professional staff temporary appointments extensions, classified staff pay increases, and/or classified position reviews. (10%)
Participate in compensation plan maintenance including calculating and updating pay tables for all classified staff at the UW. (5%)
Perform other Compensation Office duties, including (10%):
Participate in compensation and classification related training to further enhance understanding of UW policy, federal and state regulations, and to foster creative ideas of administering programs that assist in the recruitment, retention and development of staff that meet unit objectives. As a member of the Compensation team, interact, provide suggestions and implement changes to work processes; assist in the development of plans and the implementation of enhancements to the compensation and classification system. May assist with participation in compensation surveys, such as Milliman Puget Sound Regional Salary Survey, Milliman Northwest Management & Professional Salary Survey, as well as occasional ad hoc surveys by email or telephone. May Partner with UW HR partners on communications and website maintenance. Provide general office support, including scanning, filing, SharePoint and common drive maintenance, office supply ordering, etc.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business or Public Administration or related field and two years of administrative experience, including one year of progressively responsible work in Human Resources.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must demonstrate excellent writing and oral communications skills, customer service skills, and an ability to work within complex organizational structures while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint). Ability to be pro-active with a "can do" attitude about finding solutions to customer issues. Ability to change and adapt to rapidly evolving office procedures and administrative systems.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Hybrid office environment (cubicles) in Roosevelt Commons West and remote. Occasional visits to other buildings at the University of Washington.
