Overview of Executive Director Position - Museum of North Texas History

Museum of North Texas History

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall direction and supervision of museum operations, staff, collections, events, exhibits, programs, and services provided on a day-to-day basis. The Executive Director is responsible for providing leadership and organizational vision for the continued growth and development of the Museum, its collections, and its personnel. The Executive Director should serve as an advocate and spokesperson to effectively represent the Museum of North Texas History and its possibilities to individuals as well as both public and private entities to generate enthusiasm and attract wide interest and support. The Executive Director works closely with the board of directors and has broad decision-making authority in the Museum’s plans and programs. The Executive Director should seek out new initiatives and programs to move the museum forward and keep the board informed on such initiatives.

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors with the Board President being the primary spokesman of the Board. The Executive Director is an at-will employee.

Compensation:

Compensation: $48,000-$52,000, commensurate with experience

Majority of the work to be done during Tuesday- Saturday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM with some weekend and evening hours.

The Museum is open to the public Thursday-Saturday 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Roles

Provide a forward-thinking culture for the museum through effective leadership.

Forge trusting working relationships with staff, board members, donors, key community members, and visitors.

Collaborate with and act as liaison to other arts, historical and cultural organizations in the community and region.

Oversee the daily operations as outlined in the Bylaws and Operating Policies of the Museum and delegates areas of responsibility and tasks as appropriate.

Supervise and manage staff and delegate appropriate authority and responsibilities while maintaining a high level of morale

Provide direction and resources as necessary.

Ensure proper planning documents are in place such as disaster plans, maintenance plans, interpretive plans, long and short-range plans, and other similar documents.

Review and revise core documents as necessary.

Cultivate an environment that encourages the public to re-visit. In performance of these responsibilities the Executive Director will:

Regularly attend all board meetings and serve as an advisor to the board to ensure its effectiveness in its policymaking and funding roles.

Keep the board fully informed about the Museum’s progress.

Serve as liaison between the board and staff.

Maintain museum files in an organized manner; this includes but is not limited to:

Membership lists /information

Mailing lists

Board meeting documents such as minutes, treasurer’s report, etc.

Provide stewardship of the physical site in conjunction with Wichita County and the City of Wichita Falls, ensuring the facilities, grounds and collections of the Museum are well maintained and safe through use of comprehensive planning.

Provide guidance, advice, and information to the Board of Directors on all matters affecting the Museum and its performance in a thorough and timely fashion.

Oversee operating budget and identify cost-saving and growth opportunities.

Prudently manage resources within budget guidelines and according to current laws as well as the Museum’s by-laws, policies, and procedures.

Create and implement community engagement programs designed to create a clear, consistent identity for the museum that will generate enthusiasm and increase audiences for its programs.

Provide information to the public and special interest groups through presentations and participation in/on a variety of meetings, events, and committees within the community.

Supports fundraising efforts of the Board including identifying potential new resources, grant writing and donor cultivation.

Supervise collections and programs management to ensure that the programs, exhibits, and interpretive materials are integrated and consistent with the Museums mission and goals.

Stay current in the Museum and preservation field through continuing education and professional development.

Maintain a high level of energy and professionalism in terms of ethics, content of work and presentation of ideas.

Ideal Candidate:

2 years experience in museums and/or nonprofits and thorough understanding of museum best practices and industry standards.

Bachelor’s Degree in related field (history, museum studies, etc.) or commensurate experience.

Excellent Interpersonal Skills.

Experience managing a budget.

Outstanding planning, organizational and analytical skills.

Strong communication skills demonstrated through the ability to actively listen and clearly outline expectations

The ability to develop/maintain effective relationships inside and outside of MoNTH

Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective relationships.

Experience with oversight and grant writing.

Knowledge of museum database software, specifically Past Perfect.
