More Details Director, Strategic Communications Location: Washington, District of Columbia, United States Full-time Partially remote SUMMARY: The U.S. Travel Association is currently seeking a Director, Strategic Communications to join its Public Affairs department. This critical position involves leading the development and implementation of comprehensive communication strategies aligned with the organization's public affairs agenda. Key responsibilities include drafting a wide range of materials, including news releases, op-eds and speeches and collaborating closely with the Media Relations team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional writing abilities and a strategic mindset to effectively convey the organization's message to policymakers and stakeholders.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Draft news releases and press statements, op-eds and guest columns, talking points, and related materials.
Draft materials corresponding to signature moments, such as executive speeches for external audiences and congressional testimony.
Provide writing, editing, and proofreading support for all aspects of U.S. Travel’s public affairs agenda, including products used for both industry and media outreach.
Assume primary responsibility for preparing several periodic Government Relations department written products, including fact sheets and Capitol Hill communiques.
Work across departments to contribute to content on U.S. Travel’s website and digital properties.
Work with Media Communications team to devise written assets as needed.
ATTRIBUTES: Proven track record in spearheading communication-driven issue campaigns.
In-depth knowledge of national and DC media environments.
Strong grasp of federal policymaking and legislative procedures.
Ability to strategize effectively using data to craft inventive communication approaches.
Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, adhering to AP Style Guide standards.
Collaborative mindset promoting inclusivity in teamwork.
QUALIFICATIONS: Undergraduate communications-related degree required with 5-10 years of advanced experience in an advocacy first association, think tank, political agency or journalism setting.
Demonstrated ability to quickly distill complex policy and travel industry issues into succinct, persuasive copy across an array of formats.
Flawless proofreading skills and a superior command of AP style.
Strong working knowledge of the U.S. political process.
A background in the travel industry or travel-related issues a plus.
OTHER: Position based in Washington, DC. U.S. Travel staff work in the office Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with the option to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays.
