Job Summary: Responsible for all aspects of the organization’s financial management, business operations and technology. Participates as management team member to process activities that improve overall agency morale, productivity and quality of work performed. This is a hands-on position requiring excellent financial management skills, business discernment, and a collaborative spirit. The CFO supervises the staff and works collectively to continually improve efficiency and the effectiveness of the organization’s processes.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Oversees agency financial management and supervision of Fiscal team.
Responsible for all areas of financial grants and contracts management, including but not limited to grants and contracts compliance, monitoring grant spending according to funder and Board approved budgets, timely and accurate communication of results and other information to funders, grants and contracts record keeping, accurate and timely billing and collection of grants and contract funds and funder compliant overhead rate development and management to budget.
Coordinates and oversees the preparation of agency and program specific budgets and monitors operating expenses compared to budget.
Manages all daily accounting functions, manages the monthly reporting process, and prepares report package for the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
Ensures timely and accurate financial reporting and billing for all funders.
Ensures maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
Formulates and recommends objectives, plans, schedules, policies, procedures and budgets for overall agency administrative and program operations.
Oversees fixed assets and maintains records.
Oversees Information Technology and establishes policies and procedures regarding computer hardware maintenance, acquisition and usage. Sets standards and ensures consistency for hardware and software usage in the agency.
Leads internal and external audits and assures that the IRS Form 990, all tax payments, and reports are timely and accurate.
Recommends and/or direct policies and guidelines on banking; assures compliance with bank loan covenants; maintains excellent relationships with banking partners.
Creates and oversees business management and growth strategies for the agency.
Oversees and establishes Fiscal policies, procedures, and personnel.
Leads and coordinates Finance and Audit Committee meetings.
Oversees Thrift Boutique including manager supervision, accounting for daily sales, inventory and donated goods.
Proactively identifies and assesses business opportunities and risks and offers recommendations to improve efficiency and profitability; reviews vendor contracts and all legal agreements on behalf of the organization; consults outside counsel as needed.
Reviews and obtains commercial insurance policies, including general liability, and property with broker.
Oversees compliance matters relating to federal, state and local laws and national best practice standards, including requirements applying to Section 501(c)(3) nonprofits.
Performs other projects and duties as directed by the CEO and Board of Directors.
Qualifications:
Education: BA/BS in Accounting required; MBA or CPA preferred.
Experience: Prior experience in a Chief Financial Officer, Controller or Director position required.
Knowledge: Seven years’ experience in non-profit administration and management highly preferred. Experience in coaching and developing team building to create high performance climate.
Abilities: Management and leadership skills a must with ability to prioritize workload and work under pressure with multiple deadlines.
Skills: Must possess cognitive thinking and strong analytical skills. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain financial concepts to staff and partners are required. Must have strong computer skills with particular emphasis in the use of accounting software packages. Must be able to use all office equipment.
Other Requirements: Must have a valid California driver’s license, insurance and a reliable vehicle and be willing to use it on the job.
Physical Demands:
Sitting for long periods of time viewing a computer screen, in meetings or in supervision. Standing and walking frequently.
Occasional driving to meetings with vendors or in the community.
Using hands to operate keyboard and other office equipment.
