About the Department

Institutional Analysis is part of the Office of the Provost and provides data and analysis to support the work of the University. The office’s responsibilities cover external data reporting to the government and other organizations as well as regular and ad-hoc internal reporting and data management.

UChicagoGRAD is part of the Office of the Provost and supports graduate students and postdocs at every stage of their academic careers. UChicagoGRAD functions as a one-stop shop for graduate students and postdocs to access resources that support timely degree completion and to enhance professional preparation that helps them translate their degrees into a variety of careers. UChicagoGRAD works with academic departments and divisions as well as campus-wide offices to develop programs and events and training and support tailored to UChicago graduate students.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Provost for Institutional Analysis, the Senior Institutional Analyst will be responsible for strategic data analysis. The role involves close collaboration with the Office of the Provost and UChicagoGRAD, focusing on supporting graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Key responsibilities are listed below, and include data collection and analysis, and staying informed about current issues, in the area of graduate student matters and higher education more generally. Understanding the higher education landscape, and fostering collaboration between Institutional Analysis and UChicagoGRAD, are crucial aspects of the role. Additionally, there may be a responsibility to supervise graduate student interns involved in data collection and analysis. Responsibilities

Collect, analyze, and summarize data on a range of relevant higher education topics, with a particular focus on issues related to master’s and doctoral education, including admissions, enrollment, retention and time-to-degree, and placement outcomes.

Continually learn about current issues related to graduate student data specifically and higher education data in general and provide suggestions for improvement of UChicago graduate data initiatives.

Collaborate with staff in Institutional Analysis, UChicagoGRAD, and others in the Office of the Provost to translate high-level questions on topics of interest into actionable data analyses.

Collect internal and external data and develop analyses based on resulting queries.

Produce reports based on analysis for internal distribution and for external reporting.

May supervise graduate student interns in collection and analysis of data.

Analyzes moderately complex data sets for the purpose of extracting and purposefully using applicable information.

Cleans, transforms, merges, and matches between large and complex research and administrative datasets. Plans own resources to collect, organize, and analyze information from the University's various internal data systems as well as from external sources.

Performs other related work as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field. ---

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline. ---

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

Graduate degree with a quantitative component.

Experience:

At least three years of work experience or an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study.

Experience presenting data visually.

Experience working in a university or nonprofit setting.

Prior work in an institutional research setting.

Experience in higher education policy, in particular graduate student matters.

Technical Skills and Knowledge:

High proficiency with data analysis tools (any/all of: MS Excel, SQL, Stata, SPSS, R etc.).

Ability to generate static and/or interactive visual reports (any/all of: MS PowerPoint, Adobe, HTML/CSS/JavaScript etc.).

Preferred Competencies

Ability to present results of analysis to a range of audiences via oral and written communications.

Ability to work on multiple simultaneous projects, allocating time and effort appropriately and meeting deadlines.

Ability to exercise sound judgement, discretion, and tact.

Ethical, with a commitment to respecting community norms around confidentiality and privacy in particular.

Demonstrated attention to detail.

Strong organizational skills.

Self-directed, with an ability to advance work on projects and tasks with only high-level direction.

Time management skills and ability to handle multiple, concurrent tasks on deadlines.

Working Conditions

This role is office-based and may require sitting and utilizing a computer for 6-8 hours per day.

Must be able to move around the University campus easily and visit UChicagoGRAD office as needed.

Option for a hybrid work schedule.

Able and willing to work nontraditional hours when needed to meet deadlines or to respond to time-sensitive matters.
