JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Assistant Professor - Elementary and Early Childhood Education

The Pennsylvania State University - Abington College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Elementary and Early Childhood to begin in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025. This program supports the growth and content understanding of teachers beginning with the youngest learners through the fourth grade (PreK-4). Students in this program explore theories of teaching and learning, how to be professional educators in diverse school settings, and develop skills in educational leadership, inclusive education, professional inquiry and contemplative, reflexive practice. The candidate will need to be versed in early childhood education (PreK-4), pedagogy, and methods.

Candidates must have an earned doctorate (or an earned doctorate by the date of appointment) in Early Childhood Education, Special Education, or a related field and evidence of an active and focused research program which adds to or complements existing scholarly focuses within the program. In addition, candidates must have PreK-12 teaching experience, with preferred experience in PreK-4. Candidates with PreK-12 administrative and/or additional secondary teaching experience are also encouraged to apply. Aligned with the University's mission and goals, we are especially interested in those candidates whose scholarship addresses anti-bias, anti-racist, anti-oppressive theories, and practices.

A commitment to excellence and innovation in undergraduate teaching, advising, and mentoring, both inside and outside the classroom, is also essential. Candidates who have experience teaching both lower level and upper division courses in their area of expertise are preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience working with and commitment to serving diverse student populations and demonstrate interest in facilitating student/faculty research and mentoring. The teaching load is 3:3.

The administration at Penn State Abington is committed to the development of faculty scholarship. The college has an established undergraduate research participant pool, as well as several shared lab spaces and strong community partnerships. Internal funding is available for research purposes as well as faculty and student conference travel.

Penn State Abington serves racially and ethnically diverse students, first-generation college students, students from a range of socio-economic backgrounds, and a significant international student population. The Pennsylvania State University is committed to and accountable for advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability in all forms. To learn more about our institutional commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, please visit here, http://equity.psu.edu/diversity-statement.

All candidates must complete three (3) publicly available clearances before starting work at Penn State University. Those include the PA State Police Criminal Background Check, the PA Child Abuse History, and the FBI Criminal Background Check. These do not need to be completed at the time of applying.

Finally, Penn State Abington's Elementary and Early Childhood Education curricula and program centers critical questions of educational access, care for the whole person, and social justice towards anti-racist, decolonial praxis. Additionally, PSU Abington's Elementary and Early Childhood Education Program seeks to engage in teacher preparation that recognizes and does not sanitize histories of harm, oppression, and socio-political violence central to Western models of education, while also seeking to actively disrupt these systems. We therefore encourage applicants who are committed to engendering and maintaining anti-oppressive pedagogies and social justice curricula. Toward these ends, we warmly welcome a colleague who is prepared to work collaboratively within the program to prepare future teachers to challenge systems of schooling through their teaching practices in ways that seek to provide generative futures for all students, families, and communities.

Applications will be reviewed beginning on May 20, 2024 with applications accepted until the position is filled. Applications submitted prior to May 20, 2024 will receive the greatest consideration. To apply, submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a teaching statement, and three letters of reference. Application materials (except letters of reference) must be submitted online through https://hr.psu.edu/careers. Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.

Letters of reference and inquiries about the search can be sent to Search Co-Chairs, Dr. Michael Bernstein ([email protected]) and Dr. Jennifer Cressman ([email protected]) .
