CAREER ADVANCEMENT SPECIALIST / INSTRUCTOR
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Adult Education and Workforce Development Division of Catholic Charities of Boston offers comprehensive, high-quality educational services to advance and accelerate the academic achievement of adult immigrant learners who face significant barriers in their search of viable career pathways and self-sufficiency. The Adult Education Centers offer multiple levels of ESOL instruction from beginning to advanced levels of language proficiency, HiSET, the Healthcare Bridge ESOL Program, ESOL for Human Services, college and career readiness programming, Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aide Training Programs, IT Training, with flexible schedules and distance learning options.
The Career Advancement Specialist/Instructor will be responsible for teaching the ESOL for Human Services (ESOL HS) class. The Career Advancement Specialist/Instructor will support students and alumni of Catholic Charities’ ESOL HS class toward careers in Human Services. The Career Advancement Specialist/Instructor will coordinate and expand the ESOL HS employer network, provide job search and college enrollment assistance.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Teach ESOL HS Class 10-unit curriculum
Teach afternoon job skills and computer curriculum
Partner with the Program Director to facilitate accomplishment of project goals and outcomes
Recruit, interview and place qualified students into ESOL for Human Services
Assist students and alumni in defining and achieving individual career goals through employment and education
Maintain and develop partnerships with employers, community colleges, career resource centers (MassHire/JVS)
Identify and provide students with regular notifications of employment search resources, relevant job openings, job fairs and job training programs
Maintain and update alumni/student databases to track progress for grants reporting
Organize a yearly alumni professional development event
Creatively address the language learning needs of ESOL students through a variety of relevant themes or social issues that help connect students with the larger city in their study and use of English
Integrating DOE ESOL Curriculum Frameworks and student goals into weekly lesson plans
Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality
Comply with funder requirements and policies, including DESE standards for Adult Education Center classes
Work is performed in a classroom/office environment interacting with students with the use of computers and other office equipment. May stand or sit for prolonged periods.
Attend all internal and external agency meetings and trainings as required
Other responsibilities as required
Local travel as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor’s degree in related field (Human Services, Social Work, Education etc.), with experience working in Human Services. A Master’s degree is preferred, but not required.
Experience in providing counseling, needs assessment and individual coaching.
Experience teaching and working with multi-cultural adult populations (primarily Haitian, Cape Verdean, and Dominican) Bilingual and/or bicultural is preferred but not required.
Strong interpersonal, communication, problem solving, editing and organizational skills.
Interest in working with individuals of all backgrounds with varying needs.
Detail oriented with a willingness to learn new skills and techniques to promote quality, efficiency and successful outcomes. Skilled at multi-tasking and time management.
Ability to work variable program hours that meet the needs of the contract, students and program goals.
Technology skills - knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) required, Google Classroom and Zoom experience preferred
