Job Description

Primary Function of Position

The Advanced Energy team at Intuitive is a multidisciplinary group committed to developing innovative medical devices for robotic platforms, technologies, and programs. We focus on creating groundbreaking technologies that take on significant challenges and fill gaps in our healthcare system. Our mission is to shape the future of healthcare by developing platforms and ecosystems that enable providers and teams to offer transformative, life-enhancing care. This role offers a thrilling chance to be part of a creative and dynamic team during the early, fast-paced phases of product development. Joining Intuitive Surgical means becoming part of a team that uses technology to improve patient care by enhancing surgical efficiency and reducing surgical invasiveness, always prioritizing patient outcomes.

The person in this position will report directly to the technical manager of the advanced energy product. They will be tasked with the technical development of advanced energy products at Intuitive, focusing primarily on the electrical design of new generator systems for advanced devices and exploring innovative system concepts for new surgical robotics applications. The ideal candidate should have a hands-on approach, deep technical knowledge in relevant areas, and a proven track record of successful product development projects. They must thrive in a high-energy team setting and be able to make informed judgments under the typical time constraints and uncertainties of new product development.

Essential Job Duties

Design analog circuitry, digital signals, PWMs and GPIO

Provide engineering expertise in design, scrutiny, and testing of DC-DC power converters and AC-DC power converters for medical devices.

Develop detailed power electronics models to investigate and verify the controller algorithms robustness and performance across the entire operating space.

Provide rapid development and iterative design support for the testing of new technology.

Collaborate with mechanical engineers to optimize placement of high-power modules/components and bus bars.

Create clear and readable schematics for power electronics boards.

Component selection for minimum mass and maximum reliability

Work with PCB designers to create reliable and low-weight layouts

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience Expertise with AC-DC converters and power factor correction

Expertise with DC/DC conversion and testing methodologies.

Experience with circuit schematic and PCB layout.

Hands-on knowledge and experience using testing equipment such as oscilloscopes, various probes, frequency response analyzers, power supplies, electronic loads, and DMMs; Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment.

Experience of EMI/EMC filter design for power electronics products

Exceptional grasp of analog control and discrete logic design

Working experience in voltage and current mode control and compensation design

Experience with component selection while interacting with suppliers on critical components.

Required Education and Training Minimum BS degree in Electrical Engineering with focus in Power electronics

Minimum 8+ years of experience designing circuits, electronic products, or hardware

Preferred Skills and Experience Understanding of design for fault tolerance and reliability

Familiar with failure mode effects and criticality test

Experience in medical device industry and knowledge of IEC 60601-1

Knowledge of power semiconductor devices such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, BGTs, as well as wide bandgap technologies that use SiC and GaN.
