Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Provides priority setting and workflow analysis.

The Academic Program Management Supervisor will work closely with the Vice Chair of Research and Senior Director of Research and Administration in advancing the Department's research initiatives such as the Biostatistics Core, Grants Management Core, Publication and Scientific Writing Core, and the various WIPs. The individual will assist in program planning, development, administration, management, and implementation of various research initiatives. The individual will work with the Director on formulating short- and long-term planning and procedures to advance the research program's agenda. The individual will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day administration of the Department of Surgery's centralized research cores. Researches and identifies trends and plans and develops program structure and objectives. Coordinates and supervises teams' daily activities and sets priorities to ensure tasks are completed. Develops and manages each program's operating and administrative policies and procedures. Develops program plans and facilitates issue resolutions to reach stated goals and objectives. They will interpret and analyze information regarding grant submission and funding, publication profiles, NIH ranking information, and other policies and procedures. The Program Manager will regularly work on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. The individual should be able to exercise judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for achieving the program's goals and achieving results according to established timelines that they will help set. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Provides priority setting and workflow analysis.

Department Description

The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost-effective, yet compassionate; and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. Care of patients is what attracted our faculty and residents to surgery, and it continues to be our main focus. The Department is comprised of eleven divisions that include Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular & Endovascular Surgery. Our surgeons provide care at locations throughout greater San Francisco including UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus (Moffitt-Long Hospital), UCSF Medical Center at Mt. Zion, UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, San Francisco VA Medical Center, and Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland. Our residents also rotate through UCSF Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, and California Pacific Medical Center. The Department of Surgery Chair's Office is an extremely high-profile, fast-paced environment with a very diverse range of contacts and needs that require an immediate and accurate response, handled with confidentiality and compliance. The Chair's Office is responsible for the management, direction, and oversight of over 400 faculty (clinical and research), trainees, and staff personnel.

Required Qualifications

Doctorate in a related area or eight years of equivalent experience

Five or more years of managing grants/research funding portfolio experience.

Three or more years of Lead, Supervisory, or Management experience.

Demonstrated experience supervising staff and students in an academic or research setting.

Academic background and experience in relevant areas of research.

Ability to build relationships, collaborate, and problem-solve both internally and with external organizations.

Demonstrated knowledge of program development as well as grant proposal development and administration.

Demonstrated leadership skills including effective communication, negotiation, coaching, and conflict resolution.

Advanced oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Knowledge of human resources management practices and policies.

Knowledge of financial principles and budget practices.

Demonstrated knowledge of University, State, and Federal policies that influence higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

Two or more years of proficiently running research funding reports using UCSF systems.
