Editor-in-Chief

, IL, United States

The Journal of Orthopaedic Research – Spine (JORS) , produced by the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS), is currently seeking a qualified candidate to serve as the publication’s next Editor-in-Chief. The position will begin in mid-2025, with the end of the contracts of the existing Editors-in-Chief. The JORS was established in 2018, as an open-access, peer-reviewed journal that features original articles, reviews, and editorials from the worldwide orthopaedic research community. The journal features high-quality reports of new information on preclinical spine research, including life sciences, engineering, and translational studies. In 2022, JORS received its first impact factor of 3.7. It is listed in major bibliographic databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science. The ideal Editor-in-Chief will develop editorial visions and strategies for the journal, and update its scope, content, and thematic selection.

The successful candidate will use their vision and leadership to feature highly impactful, peer reviewed contributions (original articles, invited, and uninvited reviews, editorials, and special issues) from the spine research community. This candidate will manage the acquisition of manuscripts, oversee the peer review process, and appoint, select, and direct the activities of the Associate Editors and Editorial Board. The Editor-in-Chief will be expected to work in close partnership with Wiley Publishing, to prioritize content for timely production schedules, optimize quality control, facilitate successful editorial office procedures, and ensure that scientific publishing practices and the highest standards of ethics are implemented.

Responsibilities

Strategically establish an editorial program that represents the scope, mission, and values of the ORS, the JORS, and its contributors.

Monitor the scientific excellence, timeliness, and impact of the journal.

Address issues of scientific misconduct in accord with the journal’s scientific misconduct policy. (Ensure the integrity of research published in the journal, promptly flagging potential ethical issues to the publisher.)

Organize and lead Editorial Board meetings in collaboration with the publisher.

Establish appropriate editorial policies for content review, assign articles to Associate Editors, and adopt an adequate acceptance rate for the journal in concert with the publisher.

Uphold and maintain an unbiased peer-review process, ensuring that every submission worthy of consideration is reviewed, potentially revised, and a decision is provided in a timely manner for final publication.

Solicit invited reviews, commentaries, and guest editorials.

Recruit, select, and manage Associate Editors and Editorial Board Members, and periodically refresh/diversify members.

Regularly communicate with the Editorial Board and oversee Editorial Board member performance.

Use available editorial management tools to submit all materials to the publisher for each issue.

Select issue content in a timely fashion to meet production deadlines.

Host Editorial Team and Editorial Board meetings and prepare and disseminate Editorial Team and Editorial Board reports.

Network and advocate on behalf of the journal within the orthopaedic community.

Regularly report to the ORS Publications Committee and the ORS Board of Directors.

Qualifications:

Must be an active member of the Orthopaedic Research Society.

An established international reputation as an opinion leader and respected member of the scientific community, with focus in preclinical spine research.

Outstanding interpersonal skills with established basic computer literacy.

Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to lead and motivate a team of collaborators.

Have an approach to addressing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) challenges in selecting and publishing manuscripts.

Established track record in musculoskeletal and/or orthopaedic research publishing that includes reviewer and Editorial Board experience.

Basic understanding of online manuscript submission, with online editorial management.

Interested candidates should submit:

A letter of interest with motivation points and documented editorial experience.

An up-to-date curriculum vitae.

An editorial statement summarizing their vision of the JORS and qualifications for the Editor-in-Chief role.
