Vice President of Finance

NAPEO (National Association of Professional Employer Organizations) is seeking an experienced Vice President of Finance to join our team in Alexandria, VA. As the leading advocate for the Professional Employer Organization industry and the 200,000 small businesses they support, the Vice President of Finance will serve as a strategic senior leader to partner closely with the executive leadership team, external vendors and the NAPEO staff to ensure positive financial outcomes.
With a staff of around 20 professionals, including a new CEO, NAPEO is seeking to add to its internal expertise and capabilities by bringing this critical operational function in-house for the first time. This position requires an in-office presence at NAPEO’s headquarters in historic Old Town Alexandria, VA and reports directly to the CEO.
The Vice President of Finance will be responsible for managing all organizational accounting, finance, and payroll functions. Key responsibilities include:
Manage accounting functions including maintenance of chart of accounts, general ledger, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
Coordinate the processing of association payroll with Professional Employer Organization.
Manage the monthly closing process, ensuring financial statements are presented in a timely manner.
Design, implement and maintain operating policies and procedures to ensure revenue transactions are recorded in the CRM system on an accurate and timely basis.
Oversee and lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the senior leadership team.
Act as liaison to the association’s board-level finance committee and sub-committees.
Provide periodic updates to the executive committee and board of directors including quarterly presentation of financial matters.
Direct the development, implementation and maintenance of financial policies and accounting controls setting measurable objectives and goals.
Review and modernize financial organizational strategies, providing insights and recommendations to CEO.
Maintain banking relationship including treasury management.
Manage annual financial statement audit including relationship with outside auditors.
Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations and reporting requirements.
Support external auditor with 990.
Ensure compliance with other tax filings as well as conformity with Federal, state and other governmental agency requirements and standards.
Oversee association investments including investment advisor and investment policy statement.
Manage vendor relationships including contract negotiations and administration.
Lead efforts to automate accounts payable and other financial processing to identify and capitalize on efficiencies.
Complete special projects as assigned by the CEO.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
CPA strongly preferred
10+ years of hands-on experience in accounting
Trade Association/membership organization experience preferred
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Self-motivated worker with the ability to multi-task
Team-oriented colleague who prioritizes organizational success
Detailed problem solver with ability to work within tight deadlines
Strong technical proficiency working in complex systems with a thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; including, but not limited to QuickBooks, Bill.com, Excel and Word
