The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is a federally chartered, nonpartisan institution that was created by the US Congress to serve as America’s national memorial to the victims of the Holocaust and an educational institution dedicated to the history and lessons of the Holocaust. The Museum seeks to educate Americans from all 50 states and all walks of life as well as international audiences. The Museum has three areas of expertise: Holocaust remembrance, Holocaust scholarship and education, and genocide prevention.

Information about the role

The Museum shop provides visitors with a variety of memorabilia pertaining to the Holocaust and other meaningful events, including books, postcards, videos and related goods. The Shop plays an important role in the mission of the Museum by helping visitors remember their meaningful experience.

Sales Associate position reports to the Office of Finance, located in the Museum Shop. The incumbent is responsible for processing sales to customers, including on-site, by purchase order, over the phone, and mail orders. Furnishes information to customers and helps maintain adequately and neatly stocked shelves and supplies to accommodate customer needs in the Shop.

Work Schedule: 40-hour work weeks on a five-week rotating schedule providing varied work and off days. This role provides in-person services and no telework is available.

This is a full-time donated (non-Federal), paid with the Museum’s private funds. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Duties, and Responsibilities for the role

Waits on customers and operates a cash register to process sales of items.

Uses knowledge of cash register functions to process various transactions being paid by cash, credit card, personal checks or traveler’s checks, etc.

Assures proper identification and verification of signatures.

Determines and gives discounts to donors, members, employees or volunteers.

Processes refunds and voided sales and explains store policies for the various transactions as necessary.

Maintains adequate funds for change, adequate stock of cash register tapes, order forms,

pens, merchandise bags and other supplies.

Maintains security of financial instruments and assures accuracy in handling cash and making change.

Generates printouts of cash register totals and performs cash register reconciliations.

Runs transaction logs and maintains subtotals or balances as required.

Follows established procedures to closeout, review tapes and entries and evaluate other forms of transactions to obtain proper balances or adjust correct errors.

Remains familiar with inventory and directs customers to various sections of the store.

Accesses computer inventory to assist customers with titles or availability of other stock.

Furnishes information and assistance to customers about store policies or general Museum information locations.

Recommends material or items to customers if requested.

Resolves problems if possible, and passes on customer suggestions for other books or stock items.

Remains vigilant to the security of assets and inventory throughout the day.

Stocks and restocks shelves and assures adequate quantities of stock are available.

Assists in maintaining a clean and neat sales floor, workspace and a professional atmosphere for sales and service.

Handles telephone calls for the Shop and transfers calls as appropriate.

Processes mail orders by telephone or mail.

Identifies sales that cannot be processed or has problems and notifies customer or supervisor.

Enters in the register and prepares a shipping label. Pulls stock when necessary and sends to shipping staff.

Collects customer names for a mailing list and performs other assistance as required.

Minimum Qualifications for the role 2 years of experience in retail store sales setting (Museum, Bookstore, etc.).

Excellent customer service skills.

Familiar with POS systems and have excellent cash-handling skills.

Highly responsible, reliable, accurate, organized and detail-oriented.

Self-motivated, hard-working, positive, high energy team player with the ability to multitask.

Effective oral and written communication; ability to communicate with a diverse group of people.

Strong computer skills, and be quick at data entry.

Respect for teamwork; flexibility and ability to consider input of others on staff.

Preferred Qualifications for the role Be available for a set but rotating work schedule (schedule may vary on a weekly basis).

Must be able to pass a background check.

Interest in working in the cultural heritage sector.
