Job Summary Assistant Cooks will support the Head Cook with daily duties by setting up workstations with all needed ingredients and cooking equipment as well as preparing ingredients to use in cooking and assisting with serving the children. Responsible for managing food-related inventory and overall kitchen operations, equipment, and supplies. This person will ensure to prepare meals under USDA guidelines on nutrition and ORR policies are followed. This person will prepare and oversee food preparation, portion sizes, and the overall presentation of food, and ensure culturally appropriate food menus are followed.
Essential Functions:
Prepare meals and oversee the preparation of food to guarantee that children receive meals that are proportionate, consistent, and cooked properly.
Assist to inspect kitchen areas, supplies, equipment, workstations, and dining areas to verify that all are clean, safe, and in working order.
Clean food preparation areas as determined by law and company policy.
Make adjustments to food items to accommodate menu with allergies or specific diet concerns.
Order ingredients and spices as needed.
Operate various kitchen appliance such as a blender, oven, grill, or stand mixer.
Assists other cooks during the food assembly process.
Estimate expected food consumption and organize preparation.
Clean up after cook preparation and serving.
Alter dishes based on consumer suggestions or requirements.
Train and oversee kitchen personnel when necessary.
Supervise food prep and cooking.
Check food plating and temperature.
Store food products in compliance with safety practices (e.g. in refrigerators).
Maintain sanitation and safety standards in the kitchen area.
Assist to manage the inventory and order food and beverages, equipment, and supplies.
Determine areas where things can improve and come up with innovative solutions to problems.
Provide training on food services policies and procedures as required.
Other task and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements
Level: Associate Degree in Culinary Arts
1 years of previous experience with food handling.
1 year of previous experience in a fast-paced restaurant; school cafeteria experience preferred.
State Food handling certification, license or permit required.
Food Manager Certificate under the Health Department is preferred.
Ability to read, write and converse proficiently in Spanish and translate written Spanish into English is preferred.
PLEASE NOTE: MUST BE WILLING TO BE TRAINED AT OTHER LOCATIONS (77033 AND 77035) - LENGTH OF TIME TO BE DETERMINED UPON HIRE.
Working Conditions/Physical Effort
Work is performed mostly in an office setting. Evening and weekend work are requirements of the position as necessary. Regular computer work is required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; finger, handle, or feel objects, or controls; reach; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and must be able to work on a ladder. Often wear uniforms such as aprons or jackets and gloves. Are often exposed to hazardous situations and conditions that produce cuts or minor burns. Are often exposed to hot and cold temperatures, such as when working near ovens or retrieving food from freezers. Work physically near others. May work near contaminants and hazardous equipment. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
