POSITION SUMMARY The Activist Training and Development Specialist, 6-month contract is part of the Activist Training Program, a national training program and network that is responsible for the recruitment, development, and training of Greenpeace activists. This role is responsible for coordinating and implementing a comprehensive, dynamic and energetic Activist Training Program that identifies and develops capable volunteers for participation in Greenpeace non-violent direct actions. This includes developing and delivering curricula for trainings in both technical and non-technical action skills, such as arts & creative resistance, blockades, and direct action climbing. The Activist Training and Development Specialist, 6-month contract develops and implements skills training in their areas of expertise and facilitates training in others. They will also coordinate field events, direct actions and other activities as directed by the Action Team Director, Action Team Deputy Director or Activist Program Manager.

This role works often at the warehouses, where many of the trainings take place and where training gear is housed and maintained. This role will work with the warehouse staff to facilitate and maintain the spaces. Due to the nature of the job and expected heavy fieldwork, the Activist Training and Development Officer is expected to travel extensively and be prepared for a highly dynamic and flexible working environment.

The Activist Training and Development Specialist, 6-month contract is a full-time, exempt, hybrid position based in Washington, DC or the Bay Area, CA, with preference for the Bay Area. This role will report to the Activist Training and Development Program Manager. Due to the nature of the job and expected heavy fieldwork, the Activist Training and Development Officer is expected to travel extensively and frequently work outside of normal business hours and, at times, on the weekends.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Activist Recruitment, Training, Development and Retention:

Organizing and delivering technical trainings on topics such as technical climbing, boating, nonviolence, de-escalation, arts in activism, first aid, facilitation, etc...

Providing competent assessment of safety and risk management in all direct action and training environments for all parties involved

Training Greenpeace staff on the use of non-violent direct action in campaigns and on de-escalation

Building and maintaining professional relationships by recruiting, developing and maintaining new and existing activists and skilled professional and technical specialists, as needed

Project Management / Direct Action Coordination:

Planning, preparing, coordinating and executing logistics for direct actions, direct communications, protests, investigations, tours, ship-based actions and other interventions

Ensuring that all Action Team planning processes are adhered to, including being responsible for administrative duties pertaining to Action Team procedures in the preparation, execution and follow-up of events, updating action personnel data, loss/damage insurance claims, etc...

Organizing and delivering trainings on hard and soft skills

Tracking financial aspects of action projects (e.g. actions, ship tours), including budget proposals, cost control, processing invoices and producing after-project budget reports

Risk Management and Technical Skills:

Conducting thorough risk assessments and risk mitigation plans for field activities. Manage risks (life and limb, organizational, budget, and reputable) in real-time through development and deployment of activities

Ensuring that all personnel in direct actions strictly apply to health and safety protocols and procedures

Inspecting, maintaining and controlling inventory for all climbing equipment housed in Greenpeace warehouses

Evaluating and judging activist and volunteer proficiency, as related to technical skills (driving, boating, climbing, and aerial operations, etc...), the ability to safely and competently operate heavy equipment and proper use of personal protection equipment

Communication and Collaboration:

Leading, coordinating and guiding teams of staff, volunteers, and activists in the field

Project managing training teams, (eg. recruiting and meet beforehand with trainers, leading trainers through curricula and agenda development, leading, managing, and coordinating trainers, and submitting all paperwork, such as W9s and invoices)

Relationship-Building and Networking:

Maintaining and developing excellent relations with the direct actions staff throughout all

Greenpeace offices including Greenpeace International operations

Developing and maintaining relationships with other campaigning, community, and non-violent direct action organizations and with skilled professionals in related fields

This position will contribute to the work of the Actions Team across projects and teams as needed. Examples include, but are not limited to trainings, campaign events, warehouse projects, camps, work with ships, contributing the climbing, boating, arts, NVDA and Air Division programs, and maintenance of Actions equipment. Team members take part in trainings and skill development to build knowledge in these areas and to help create new possibilities for effective campaigning.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge and Experience:

Minimum 5 years experience working on environmental and social change issues

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

Experience working with and managing activists and/or activist networks.

Experience as a trainer in one or more of the following: non-violent direct action, boat driving, climbing, blockades, art in activism/prop building, field research, anti-oppression/collective liberation, wilderness first aid

Proven team leadership, management abilities and personnel assessment skills

Experience working for either Greenpeace or other non-profit organizations

Experience working within a complex organization

Budget management experience

Understanding of direct action campaigning and environmental, social and racial justice issues

Understanding of health and safety issues relating to direct actions

Proven candor when giving feedback to potential activists

Skills/Competencies/Attributes:

Ability to connect with a cross section of society/diverse groups: cultures, age groups, etc.

Ability to plan and organize recruitment drives

Ability to evaluate and report on the effectiveness of recruiting program

Ability to develop and mentor people

Excellent written and oral communications skills

Excellent organizing, project management, and planning skills

Ability to work effectively in a team environment

Ability to be self-directed and to work well under pressure

Familiar with CRM, survey platform, and database management

Computer literacy

Safety training and/or licensing in operating boats, first aid, CPR and wilderness response and/or willingness to obtain, preferred

Commitment to the ideals of Greenpeace, including a global perspective

Commitment to non-violence and skilled in conflict resolution

Other:

Current driver's license

Ability and willingness to travel extensively

Exposure to varying weather and the elements

Must be able to carry up to 40 pounds

Ability and willingness to endure physically demanding aspects of the work such as (eg climbing, moving over uneven terrain, operating heavy equipment, standing for extended periods of time

Work Conditions:

Willingness to work long hours

Willingness toward exposure to outdoor elements, paint, solvents and gasoline

Willingness to drive larger vehicles and trailers

The pay grade for this role is a 3, and the salary anticipated to be within the range of $63,410 - $68,632 will be provided to the successful candidate having met the minimum requirements for the position consistent with reflecting our commitment to maintaining competitive and fair compensation practices.
