Departmental Overview

The College of Engineering at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 220 regular faculty members, 1600 graduate students, and 2,700 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. Operating expenditures for the College as a whole are close to $200 million annually.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) is a large academic department within the College of Engineering with 38 faculty, 7 Professors of the Graduate School, one professor-in-residence, four adjunct faculty, 25 career staff, 85 visiting researchers, four post-doctoral scholars, and six joint appointments from other departments who collaborate on teaching and research. ME has approximately 1,210 students of which: 750 are undergraduates, 200 PhD, 180 Masters, and 80 Aerospace Engineering program students. The Department is actively engaged in teaching and research in the disciplines of Biomechanical Engineering, Controls, Design, Dynamics, Energy Science and Technology, Fluids, Manufacturing, Materials, Mechanics, MEMS and Nano, Ocean Engineering, Robotics, and Aerospace Engineering with research and instructional laboratories in Etcheverry Hall, Hesse Hall, and the Richmond Field Station. Mechanical Engineering's Technical & Instructional Support Group consists of 10 career technical staff and forms the primary support to research and instructional laboratories, and the student access machine shop.

The Information Systems Analyst manages the Mechanical Engineering department's administrative and instructional computing and audiovisual systems, and provides in-person technical support to faculty, staff, and students.

Responsibilities

System Administration

Manage Windows workstations running specialized engineering software for in-person instructional computer lab use or for remote access. Update workstation disk images yearly, and install additional software during semester via GPO, scripting, or other automated methods.

Manage Windows license servers for software used across several departments, and manage software licenses, working with faculty and software vendors to ensure timely license renewal.

Manage staff MacOS and Windows computers, including laptops used off site.

Manage Windows servers, Active Directory users, computers, security groups, and Group Policy for departmental IT infrastructure.

Manage desktop printers, shared multifunction copiers, copier user accounts, and print quotas for students in instructional computer labs.

Resolve campus network security notifications.

Ensure departmental compliance with campus IT policies.

Write and maintain internal documentation in Confluence wiki.

End User Technical Support

Serve as primary contact for department end user technical support. Assist faculty, staff, and students with computer hardware, Zoom, Google Suite, Box, VPN, DocuSignWi-Fi and Ethernet, cardkey access, telecom, etc.

Provide IT and AV technical support for department events such as advisory board meetings.

Manage loans of tablets and other computing hardware for instructors.

Perform ergonomic workstation evaluations for employees.

Technology Service Integration

Initiate and conduct product research and implement solutions that improve the effectiveness and efficiency of department business processes.

Provide local expertise for campus bConnected systems such as Google Suite (email, calendar, storage, mailing lists), Box (storage), DocuSign, and Zoom.

Manage departmental Google SPA (role) accounts, Google calendars, Google Drive shared drives, and department email lists.

Manage department usage of campus IT services such as NetApp storage, virtual servers, and campus data network.

Select and purchase computer and audiovisual hardware.

Audiovisual Support

Manage audiovisual systems including projectors, audio equipment, and course capture hardware in department classrooms.

Manage displays and projectors in conference rooms.

Manage digital signage systems.

Assist with recording and streaming of special events.

Required Qualifications

Windows Server system administration, Active Directory, Group Policy.

Windows and MacOS desktop and laptop system management.

Windows system disk imaging and software distribution.

TCP/IP networking, network security, Wi-Fi, Ethernet.

End user IT technical support for desktop and laptop computers, printers, Google Suite, Zoom, Box, VPN, etc.

Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.

Interpersonal and customer service skills for working with technical and non-technical personnel.

Problem-solving skills, motivation to learn, and persistence to work through challenging technical issues.

Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.

Preferred Qualifications

VMware and Citrix virtual machine management.

Audiovisual equipment installation and management.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,800 to $122,000 yearly. This is a 100% FTE, exempt career appointment eligible for full benefits.
