User Researcher

Palo Alto, CA, United States

About Glean

We’re on a mission to make knowledge work faster and more humane. We believe that AI will fundamentally transform how people work. In the future, everyone will work in tandem with expert AI assistants who find knowledge, create and synthesize information, and execute work. These assistants will free people up to focus on the higher-level, creative aspects of their work.

We’re building a system of intelligence for every company in the world. On the surface, you can think of it as Google + ChatGPT for the enterprise. Under the hood, our platform is the connective tissue between AI and knowledge. It brings all of a company’s knowledge together, understands it at a deep level, provides industry-leading search relevance over it, and connects it to generative AI agents and applications.

Glean was founded by a seasoned team of former Google search and Facebook engineers who saw a need in the enterprise space for their technical depth and passion for AI. We’re a diverse team of curious and creative people who want to help each other get big things done—so we can help other teams do the same.

We're backed by some of the Valley's leading venture capitalists—including Sequoia, Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed, and General Catalyst—and have assembled a world-class team with senior leadership experience at Google, Slack, Facebook, Dropbox, Rubrik, Uber, Intercom, Pinterest, Palantir, and others.

Role

Glean is looking for an experienced Lead Researcher to collaborate with our product teams to build a world-class, once-in-a-generation-product in a creative, focused environment.

As our inaugural User Researcher, you will play a foundational role in leading strategic research projects, driving product strategy through user insights, shaping the research function at Glean, and creating programs to scale research efforts. You’ll collaborate closely with members of our product, design, and engineering teams to integrate research into roadmaps, drive impact from insights, and shape what we build.

This role is a part of our Design team, a tight-knit and collaborative group of product and brand designers. This would be an exciting opportunity for a seasoned qualitative researcher who’s interested in applying their craft on a cutting-edge product and helping to grow the team in the future.

What you will do and achieve

Identify and prioritize strategic and tactical research questions that will have the most impact on Glean’s business and customers.

Lead foundational qualitative studies to identify product opportunities and shape decisions at both a strategic and tactical level from definition to post-launch evaluation, using a variety of methods such as ethnographic field research, surveys, interviews, diary studies, usability studies, and more.

Communicate research findings to inform business decisions through storytelling, data visualizations, presentations, workshops, reports, or whatever format gets insights into our decision making.

Build purposeful relationships with a wide array of partners across the company.

Work collaboratively as a strategic partner to Product Managers, Product Designers, Product Engineers, and Data Scientists to define long-term strategy and short-term tactics for our products by grounding decisions in user needs and insights.

Facilitate research democratization by mentoring and training other Gleaners like Product Managers and Product Designers to run their own research studies so you can focus on the highest impact work.

Who you are

4+ years of experience working as a user researcher on digital experiences, ideally 1-2 years on a smaller team or company where you have done hands-on research on an early-stage team.

Experience with qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis

Experience managing projects involving cross-functional teams

Record of discovering, synthesizing, and socializing actionable insights that have influenced products

Ability to balance working with urgency and focus alongside methodological rigor and being able to adapt as needed for the situation

Ability to focus relentlessly on users and solve for their needs and wants

Strong written, verbal, and storytelling skills

A learning, self-starter, and growth mindset with an ability to navigate ambiguous projects in a fast-paced environment and own problems with a sense of curiosity and a desire to make things better.

Bonus skills and attributes

Experience working on a B2B SaaS product

Experience working on AI products and features

Experience partnering with Data Science

Experience working in smaller research teams in a fast-paced environment

Benefits

Competitive compensation

Medical, Vision and Dental coverage

Flexible work environment and time-off policy

401k

A home office improvement stipend when you first join

Annual education stipend

Wellness stipend

Healthy lunches and dinners provided daily

For California based applicants:

The standard base salary range for this position is $162,000 - $250,000 annually. Compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Certain roles may be eligible for variable compensation, equity, and benefits.

We are a diverse bunch of people and we want to continue to attract and retain a diverse range of people into our organization. We're committed to an inclusive and diverse company. We do not discriminate based on gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, civil or family status, age, disability, or race.
