GJD-311130 02/23: Psychology / Social and Behavioral Sciences

Community College of Denver is seeking individuals with demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning and work environment. CCD values the ability to work effectively with students, families, faculty, instructors, and staff of diverse backgrounds.

Community College of Denver's educational programs are designed to enrich the social, civic and economic fabric of our community, nation and the world. Ideas, innovation and the preparation of a well-trained workforce are essential to a vibrant economy. CCD provides access and opportunity for nontraditional students, workforce development and training resources for local organizations, and community partnerships that are improving high school graduation, college enrollment and career success. CCD serves approximately 8,000 students, the majority of whom are from racially minoritized populations. 33.4% of CCD's students are Latinx, 10.6% are African-American, 7% are international students, and 5.3% are Asian-American. CCD was designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education in 2001. The college earned this distinction because more than 30 percent of our students currently self-identify as Hispanic/Latinx. The benefits of this designation include eligibility for federal funds and grants that benefit our entire student population such as additional accelerated courses, computer labs, academic advisors, and other support services.

Description of Job

Teaches five psychology courses per semester. Participation in Academic/Administrative committees and other responsibilities to the college. Assists with development of the Psychology program.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

Responsibilities for this position include teaching college-level psychology courses, which may include a combination of Introductory Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Social Psychology, Human Sexuality, and/or Human Growth and Development. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about culturally-responsive pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx, Asian, and Native American students, who are historically underrepresented and underserved in traditional psychology classrooms. This position reports directly to the Chair of Behavioral Sciences and works collaboratively with the Chair and other Behavioral Science faculty. All faculty within the department report indirectly to the Social and Behavioral Sciences Dean.

Teaching

Primary teaching duties will consist of courses within the Psychology discipline. A full course load is defined as 15 credit hours per semester or 5 standard classes. Alternative assignments for administrative or related duties are possible. Faculty must demonstrate strong teaching skills and be able to engage and motivate students using both traditional and innovative methods of instruction, including use of technology, while teaching a curriculum grounded in core values of critical thinking, respect, competence, professional development, and ethical responsibility. A commitment to equity and student success that goes beyond the classroom is essential, as are effective interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills.

Service to the College

In addition to teaching, faculty in this position will work collaboratively with other Behavioral Science faculty to develop and modify curriculum and engage in other departmental initiatives and responsibilities, including efforts to maintain coherence across CCD's many instructional venues (e.g., on-line, community campuses, and Pre-Collegiate programs), textbook selection, and professional development of faculty. Other duties may include oversight of Psi Beta, advising students on programs and degree planning. All full-time faculty are also expected to serve on college committees.

After gaining experience, full-time faculty may be expected to share in broader department coordination duties on a collaborative basis. These duties could include scheduling and staffing issues, hiring and supervision of adjunct faculty, resolution and mediation of faculty/student disputes, coordination with other educational venues, mentoring adjunct faculty, and facilitating staff development in the Behavioral Science Department.

Professional Development

It is the expectation of the College that faculty will continue to be active scholars in their chosen field. They should pursue their academic growth by taking formal academic courses or by attending conferences and workshops and otherwise reading, exploring, and enriching their knowledge of Psychology and related fields.

Service to the Community

Faculty should also be leaders in the community. Incorporating the community into the college will be a key component of the position. Faculty may serve on local boards or commissions, providing valuable leadership to the community as a whole.
