Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under general supervision of the Laboratory Safety Program Lead, executes the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Chemical Inventory Program with the support of up to six student assistants. This includes high-level application of the RSS Chemicals software, working directly in the research laboratories for physical inventorying efforts, and hiring/supervision/coordination of student employees.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree- In related area, or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.

1-3 years - Experience working with hazardous materials in a lab or other relevant setting.

Solid, comprehensive working knowledge and understanding of EH&S practices, and principles related to the management of hazardous materials, including related laws and regulations.

Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies, including in emergency response situations.

Familiarity with relevant systems, databases, and equipment.

Solid organizational skills to plan, prioritize, organize, and delegate multiple projects with competing deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

1-3 years -Experience planning for and responding to emergencies involving hazardous materials.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

75% Physical Inventory - With the support of student assistants, responsible for traveling to campus laboratories and entering all chemicals on campus into the RSS Chemicals database. This will include creating sublocations, identifying types of storage (flammable cabinets, gas cabinets, etc.), the barcoding of these locations and the chemicals stored there, and ensuring the chemicals are properly segregated and stored safely. This effort includes the initial creation of new chemical inventories as well as the annual reconciliation of existing inventories.

10% Supervision - Responsible for the recruitment of up to six undergraduate student assistants to assist in the physical process of inventorying all chemicals on campus. Will train, supervise, and coordinate the efforts of these employees.

10% Systems Administration & Data Analysis - Responsible for utilizing RSS Inspect to confirm campus compliance with all applicable regulations regarding the storage of hazardous materials including the California Fire Code Maximum Allowable Quantities (MAQ) requirements. Works with UCSB Fire Prevention to ensure that building information present in RSS Chemicals is accurate and up to date, including the presence of sprinklers, occupancy type, and the assignment of control areas. Provides regular status reports to the laboratory safety program lead. Serves as the Systems Administrator of the Chemical Inventory System including but not limited to: responding to user login requests; creating user accounts (activate/inactivate users); troubleshooting issues with users in conjunction with IT; entering new chemicals into the system library, editing inaccuracies within the system/library, making decisions based on conflicting sources of information; and serving as the Systems Administrator for the UC Safety Profile application.

5% Emergency Preparedness & Response - Serves on the EH&S Emergency Response Team to provide assistance in emergency situations, particularly those related to hazardous materials, utilizing protective equipment, as needed. Responds to after-hours campus emergencies, to assist in implementing mitigations and coordinating with other emergency responders. Occasionally acts as first- responder, sometimes alone, to after-hours hazardous materials emergencies to evaluate, prioritize, and coordinate the campus response.
