The Senior Director of Development will be motivated by, and appreciate the value of fundraising and external constituent engagement to drive awareness, ensure resource generation while developing long and short and long-term financial organizational sustainability. The individual in this role will be a dynamic nonprofit leader with an entrepreneurial mindset, be detail oriented, enjoy communications, appreciate diversity, work well in teams and closely align with and represent MLP's mission, vision and values. The Sr. Director of Development will be a key internal and external facing leader that will display determination, resilience in increasing individual, corporate and foundational development to meet the organizational financial needs.
Position Description
The Senior Director of Development will be a seasoned fundraising professional and lead the expansion of the strategy and execution of fundraising activities for Mindful Life Project. This will be to adequately provide sustainable funding streams and community support to continue to help grow and scale the organization as a leader in mindfulness based social emotional learning programming in schools. The Sr. Director of Development is responsible for cultivating, soliciting and stewardship of relationships with outside donors, corporations and foundations that provide grants and opportunities for the organization. The Sr. Director of Development will serve as a primary driver for internal processes and external engagement that will ensure a consistent and deliberate focus on those individuals and organizations whose development will have a significant impact on Mindful Life Project. This position will help foster an environment of fundraising within the organization. The Sr. Director of Development manages the MLP Development Manager and serves on the senior leadership team for the development and execution of the strategic plan and other mission-related duties with the Executive Director, other key leadership staff and Board of Directors.
Job Summary
Business Development & Sustainability:
Create, direct, and implement an annual development plan to ensure more than $3,000,000 in development is secured.
Responsible for building and managing foundation, corporate, government and individual donor pipelines that provide for two times the fundraising goal to achieve philanthropic and relationship management goals, including managing revenue projections.
Responsible for researching, preparing and submitting assigned grant applications and funder reports, working in concert with others on the development team.
Attend, assist and represent Mindful Life Project in engagements at various key fundraising events/functions, speaking engagements, tours, and other programs. Lead funder visits to school sites.
Lead and support fundraising events and opportunities to engage donors.
Create marketing campaigns and create awareness building opportunities for the organization.
Relationship Management: Primary relationship managers for current and prospective philanthropic partners, including a portfolio of annual donors, and will help lead and execute growth strategies.
Identify, cultivate, and deliver significant gifts from a diverse base of supporters (corporations, foundations, individuals) working in collaboration with the Executive Director, and the Board.
Personally secure and deliver significant gifts (four and five figures).
Maintain and document in our database an active schedule of solicitations, cultivation visits, events and stewardship activities, etc.
Work closely with the Executive Director to be targeted in outreach and engage funders in meetings and site visits.
Develop and manage a dynamic portfolio of donors by strategically cultivating existing relationships for renewals and upgrades, while also identifying and engaging new philanthropic partners to secure new gifts.
Board Partnership & Development In collaboration with the Executive Director, support the work of the MLP board and board members' individual fundraising plans.
Support the committees within the MLP Board and leverage the board for strategic gift solicitations..
Required Skills & Experience 5+ years of fundraising and development or comparative relevant experience with a proven and demonstrable track record of success and familiarity with the local market of residency and preferred knowledge across the markets.
Experience with direct solicitation required. The strongest candidate will have demonstrated experience in fundraising in the San Francisco Bay Area.
At least 3 years with direct supervisory experience.
Experience leading and managing staff in an innovative, entrepreneurial culture.
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust within a team, as well as lead group presentations.
Requires flexibility to readily adapt to a changing environment.
Strong knowledge of effective fundraising strategies including grant seeking, individual donor cultivation, corporate employee volunteer programs, event production and government funding.
Possess excellent organizational and analytical skills and the ability to multitask and meet aggressive deadlines.
Tech savvy and familiarity with donor management/engagement systems and online social networks.

Demonstrated problem solving skills to manage priorities, recommend solutions, implement strategies and reach goals.
Able to interpret data and translate them into actionable insights that influence fundraising, marketing and communication plans.
Strong relationship management and cross-team collaboration skills, with a mix of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Education - Bachelor's degree required with desired fundraising trainings and or development networking/learning communities
Experience - At least 5 years of fund development, ideally in a lead team role.
