Research Assistant Professor - Genome Sciences

Seattle, WA, United States

University of Washington: Academic Personnel: School of Medicine: Genome Sciences Location Seattle, WA

Open Date Description The Department of Genome Sciences and the Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine seeks 1 full-time Research Assistant Professor (non-tenure eligible) to establish a long-term collaboration with Dr. Jay Shendure. This position will direct a research program around the design/synthesis of large-scale DNA molecules of arbitrary sequence and their subsequent delivery to cells. DNA synthesis at this scale is a nascent technology that portends to have broad implications in genomics research, analogous to the impact of DNA sequencing. Establishment of this platform technology within the department would both facilitate ongoing research and open new avenues of investigation in many areas including understanding gene regulation and genome structure, recording developmental and disease biology and therapeutic cell engineering. In addition to research, this position will engage in light teaching (no classroom instruction expectation) and service. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

Research Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. The appointment has an anticipated start date of April 1, 2024.

The base salary range for this position will be: $7,917 - $8,750 per month ($95,004 - $105,000 annually) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include an administrative salary supplement for administrative service as DNA Design and Synthesis Platform Director.

The administrative duties for which the candidate will receive an administrative supplement include establishing the Brotman Baty DNA Design and Synthesis Platform and serving as Director. Goals for this platform include learning the rules of gene regulation, recording developmental and cancer biology, and refactoring native mammalian loci. As part of directing this research program, candidates will be expected to: mentor undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral trainees and staff, acquire funding to conduct the research program through grants or other mechanisms and publish results from the research program. Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, hands-on experience in large-scale DNA synthesis.

The Department of Genome Sciences strives for a cooperative, just and equitable environment in which scientists of all backgrounds are enabled to pursue their research. The Department’s efforts to foster equity in science include a summer research program for undergraduates from underrepresented backgrounds; recruitment of graduate students at ABRCMS/SACNAS conferences; and department-wide symposia focused on fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our faculty, trainees and staff develop and utilize cutting-edge approaches and technologies to interpret variation across the genome, proteome, and regulatory landscape, working toward the ultimate goal of understanding disease risk and best medical practices across people of varying ages, genders, and genetic backgrounds.

To ensure full consideration, complete applications must be received by December 1, 2023.

Qualifications Applicants must hold a PhD or foreign equivalent in molecular biology or cell biology or a related field. 1 year of postdoctoral experience in functional genomics.

Application Instructions Candidates should apply via Interfolio by submitting: curriculum vitae, statement of research (3 pages maximum), and 3 signed letters of recommendation.

This institution is using Interfolio's Faculty Search to conductthis search. Applicants to this position receive a free Dossieraccount and can send all application materials, includingconfidential letters of recommendation, free of charge.

University of Washington is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer.
