Electrical Engineer Early to Mid Career
Job Description
We are seeking an early to mid-career Electrical Engineer to join our agile team at TransAstra, a fast-growing space resources, supply, and logistics company located near Sylmar, California. We have exciting development projects in several areas including optical sensing (asteroid finding and Space Domain Awareness), spacecraft propulsion, and orbital debris removal. We are focused on developing state-of-the-art hardware and software to support our groundbreaking projects. The candidate we seek will be instrumental in designing electronics assemblies associated with complex mechanical, electrical and electronics systems. At TransAstra, our engineers directly participate in the multidisciplinary development of cutting-edge space technologies, pushing the boundaries of the industry. Duties and Responsibilities:
With guidance from senior engineers, the selected candidate will:
Lead the design and development of printed circuit boards using KiCAD and electrical wiring assemblies, ensuring designs meet both functionality and reliability standards for space applications.
Lead the development of embedded firmware using Python, Rust, C, and/or C++.
Utilize PDM systems for efficient management and tracking of design data, documentation, and revisions throughout the project lifecycle.
Collaborate closely with cross-disciplinary teams to integrate electrical designs with mechanical, electrical, software, and other system components, ensuring seamless functionality and system integrity.
Assemble and rework PCBs (SMD and Through-hole components) and electrical wiring from small data cables to large power and high voltage cables.
Perform quality control of electrical assemblies
Debug electrical and electronics systems using standard lab equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.
Design, adapt, and maintain laboratory data acquisition systems
Specification, procurement, and testing of components including motors, actuators, sensors, etc.
Provide support on multidisciplinary engineering problems and projects
Required Qualifications/Experience:
B.S. in Electrical Engineering (or related field) Minimum GPA of 3.5
Engineering Programming (Python, Rust, C/C++, etc.)
Circuit design and controls experience
Proficiency in eCAD for designing PCB schematics and boards (KiCAD or similar)
Proficiency in designing wiring diagrams
Solid understanding of standard electronics circuitries, including but not limited to power conversion, power distribution, mixed-signal circuitry.
Demonstrated experience in designing, prototyping, and testing electrical systems, preferably in the space industry or similar high-tech fields.
Strong problem solving, technical, math and science skills
Hands-on experience in laboratory or testing environment
U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder (due to the export-controlled nature of our work)
Available for a minimum of 40 hours a week
Must be currently located in (or able to relocate to) the Los Angeles area
Excellent written and communication skills
Desired Qualifications/Experience:
Experience with PDM systems for managing design data and documentation.
Direct experience with data acquisition systems
Experience with SPICE simulations
Knowledge of power electronics and/or high voltage electronics.
Knowledge of space electronics engineering and vacuum electronics.
Direct experience with assembling electrical boxes and building PCBs.
CAD Design (Solidworks preferred, AutoCAD or NX acceptable).
Prior involvement in space technology projects, especially those related to optical sensing, spacecraft propulsion, or orbital debris removal.
