The Louisiana Special Schools are experiencing a critical shortage of certified teachers, school counselors, interpreters and educators of the Deaf or hard of hearing.

The LA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF is seeking an OUTREACH TEACHER,

to service the NEW ORLEANS and SURROUNDING AREAS.

This is a full time 9.5 months and 7.5 hours per day position.

An outreach instructor for the greater New Orleans area is required to provide non-Part C early intervention services to Deaf and hard of hearing infants and toddlers throughout the area. The outreach instructor will work with families of deaf and hard of hearing, instructing on language options, hearing levels, amplification options. The outreach instructor will also maintain appropriate documentation monitoring language development and attending to IFSP meetings.

This position may require frequent travel possibly greater than 100 miles/day. Must be willing to work flexible shifts and days. Travel, night and weekend work may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Louisiana Teacher certification as set forth in Louisiana Standards for State Certification of School Personnel (Bulletin 746) including the Hearing Impaired/Deaf Education, Early Childhood or Special Education endorsement(s) or a Speech-Language Pathology Degree as outlined by the Louisiana Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology. Possession and presentation of Conference of Executives of American School for the Deaf/Council on Education of the Deaf (CEASD/CED) certification will satisfy the Louisiana requirement fort the Hearing Impaired/Deaf Education endorsement or the ability to obtain Hearing Impaired/Deaf Education certification within three (3) year of hire date.

Must possess, or be willing to acquire, knowledge of and ability to apply current standards-based educational practices associated with children who are Deaf or hard of hearing to a variety of settings.

Must possess a current Driver’s License and the ability to be certified through the State Driver Safety Program. Frequent travel greater than 100 miles/day is required.

Must have access to reliable transportation to retrieve/return state vehicles and/or rental vehicles in order to perform job duties.

Must have access to personal telephone services at home.

Programmatic Responsibilities

Travels throughout Louisiana to provide outreach services to children and their families.

Travels to SSD Baton Rouge campus on annually identified dates to assist with instruction and student activities as directed by the supervisor.

Administer prescribed pre and post tests to evaluate the student progress.

Provides input for decisions regarding placement of children in appropriate educational programs.

Uses designated curricula and materials in the teaching/learning process in a variety of approaches and techniques which develop lesson objectives and meet child and family needs.

Prepares and utilizes appropriate materials to meet specific needs of the child and the family.

Develop weekly lesson plans for child ages 0 – 3 for supervisory review.

Specifies learner outcomes in clear, concise objectives; includes activities that develop objectives; identifies materials needed for lessons; and states method(s) of evaluation.
