JOB PURPOSE:
The Educator utilizes subject matter expertise to develop and implement educational programs for
the Piedmont Healthcare Care Management and Central Services staff in order to promote
knowledge and skill development and facilitate improved performance. These activities will be in
accordance with Piedmont Healthcare policies and procedures, regulatory guidelines, and current
national practice standards.
The role of the educator may be dedicated to one or more of the following focus areas of content:
Care coordination, discharge planning, and transitions of care
Utilization review, denials management
Use of technology that supports care management related functions
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Program Development:
Analyzes performance and develops educational plan in alignment with current developments
in the profession in order to facilitate practice improvement. Needs may be determined by:
- interviews, questionnaires, group problem analysis,
- examination of existing records (data entry completeness, accuracy, timeliness of
activity/documentation),
- analysis of existing reports (PEPPER, denials, observation data, HCAHPS for
Discharge Planning and Transitions of Care)
- direct observation, and / or
- communications and requests received from associates / care management leaders
Develops and documents plan to meet learning needs, complete with learning objectives,
priorities, structure, activities, media, materials and methods of instruction most appropriate
for the group / individual and at the appropriate skill level (novice, advanced, remedial)
Documents annual quality assurance / training strategy and plan (competency
requirements, expected outcomes, target audience, budget, and facility/equipment
requirements)
Maintains program records and reference materials, updates/creates policies/procedures,
provides logistical support for participants, and provides on-site program support.
Documents and distributes process change updates to all affected associates within the
enterprise
2. Oversees Training / Education Process
Translates the designed program into actual training materials and strategies.
Completes lesson plan documents, choosing methods and media appropriate for each
instructional event, times each section within the lesson to best utilize time, curriculum
guides / outlines, workbooks, handouts, case studies, newsletters, exercises to support
program lessons, audio-visuals and competency testing tools.
Develops computer-based learning vehicles and identifies appropriate software to support
learning initiatives
Schedules facilities, equipment and participants; conducts the instructional event through
lecture and demonstration-based instruction, adjusting instruction methods to meet associate
needs
3. Evaluation of Educational Efforts
Measures the impact that learning has had upon the individual(s) and whether a change in
behaviors / actions has occurred, through post-tests, associate interviews, QA audits and
other documentation.
Determines the strengths/weaknesses of the program, adjusting ensure improvements.
Provides feedback to participants as requested during the training session, as well as
feedback to management of the participants competency.
4. Oversees Performance Improvement / Quality / Audit Process:
Establishes monitoring tools and oversees data collection and analysis, communicating data
to appropriate areas in a timely, effective manner.
Utilizes outcomes in the development of future educational programs and/or system/process
redesign to enhance user compliance
Monitors Care Management key performance indicators
Actively participates in the redesign of care management functions / processes and systems
to improve service, data integrity, productivity/quality, and to achieve departmental goals and
process outcomes
5. Assists with the development of the orientation and onboarding plan for new employees to the
Care Management or Central Services department.
Maintains staff competency / regulatory guidelines and ensures that Care Management
departmental partners have taken mandatory education and adhered to established
educational plans.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Ability to manage multiple ongoing projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to understand and effectively communicate complex clinical operations and processes.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
Strong computer skills including InterQual and Microsoft Office.
Effective at time management.
Strong communication and presentation skills, using techniques such as Situation, Background,
Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR).
Work under minimal supervision.
Knowledge of hospital audit and certification / accreditation process by a state or federal entity
or hospital accreditation organizations such as Det Norske Veritas (DNV) or The Joint
Commission.

Qualifications:
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Two (2) years of experience demonstrating knowledge of national practice and regulatory
standards and concepts related to care coordination, discharge planning, transitions of care, and
utilization review.
Experience in developing, implementing and leading training using methods such as classroom and
computer based training.
MINIMUM LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:
If degree is in Nursing, current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license, or eligibility for licensure in the
state of Georgia is required.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Healthcare experience in a case manager, social worker and / or utilization review role
preferred.
Experience working across a complex organization as an internal or external consultant to
improve clinical education.
Degree and/or certification in Adult Education, Organizational Development, Healthcare or
Business Administration or other healthcare profession is preferred
Certification in case management or utilization review (i.e. ACM, CCM, CMAC, URAC)
