Program Manager, Coalition for Next Generation Life Sciences

Baltimore, MD, United States

The Vice Provost for Institutional Research and Analytics at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Program Manager to lead the Coalition for Next Generation Life Science ("Coalition").

The Coalition was launched in 2017 to provide robust and publicly available information on education and training outcomes in the biomedical sciences. The founding of the Coalition was announced through a piece in Science that discussed how a number of enduring challenges defined the biomedical workforce; how numerous reports over the years had called for research universities and other research institutions to make meaningful data available to their trainees to understand fully the range of likely outcomes of their eventual training and career choices; how few institutions had followed through on this promise, and how following through on this commitment could contribute to the unraveling some of the pain points that characterize the doctoral and post-doctoral experience in the biomedical sciences.

The Coalition now counts more than 50 research institutions across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as members. The presidents or chancellors of these institutions have committed to collect and make publicly available the following data using common standards:

Admissions and matriculation data of biomedical PhD students.

Median time-to-degree and completion data for biomedical PhD programs.

Demographics of biomedical PhD students and postdoctoral scholars by gender, underrepresented minority status and citizenship status.

Median time in postdoctoral status at the institution.

Career outcomes for biomedical PhD and postdoctoral alumni, classified by job sector and career type using a common taxonomy.

Many of the member institutions have gone on to fulfill these commitments for all fields, not only those in the biomedical sciences.

We are now seeking someone to lead the Coalition into its next phase. This position presents an opportunity for an individual passionate about science policy and graduate education to chart the future of an organization committed to data transparency and the future of the biomedical sciences; to work closely with faculty, staff and senior leadership across Johns Hopkins, one of the world's leading research universities; and to engage science policy leaders and other stakeholders at member institutions and elsewhere in the academic and research community to promote the use of data to strengthen doctoral and post-doctoral biomedical education.

Specific duties & responsibilities

Develop strategies and programming to promote data transparency in the biomedical sciences.

Develop and implement strategies to grow the membership and capabilities of the Coalition.

Promote compliance with updating milestones among Coalition members.

Liaise the Office of the President, the Office of the Provost, and faculty, staff and trainees across Johns Hopkins to advance the goals of the Coalition.

Liaise with presidents, chancellors, and senior officials at Coalition members.

Collaborate with organizations and stakeholders interested in data transparency and the future of the biomedical sciences.

Work with senior leadership at member institutions and other stakeholders to refine and expand the Coalition's taxonomies and definitions.

Explore and implement avenues to analyze the published data and develop communities of practice across members institutions to use data to improve training outcomes.

Organize gatherings, events, and other engagements to promote the work of the Coalition.

Pursue, as appropriate, philanthropic opportunities to advance the aims of the Coalition.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities

A strong understanding of graduate programs and the biomedical sciences and a demonstrated passion for science policy and related issues.

An ability to work independently while engaging colleagues and supervisors at strategic or key moments.

A consensus builder with vision; a collaborative, collegial style; the ability to establish credibility and forge relationships with broad and diverse constituencies.

An ability to operate effectively in complex, dynamic environments.

Evidence of strong quantitative, data analytic, and research design skills.

Ability to analyze and interpret data and communicate findings clearly and accurately, in written, oral, and graphic formats, so that it is understandable by a variety of audiences.

An open, thoughtful listener, strategic thinker, strong communicator and negotiator, with unquestionable integrity.

Excellent organizational, time management and communication skills.

A clear record of excellent judgment and outstanding critical thinking skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in a STEM field or one with substantial policy orientation.

2-3 years of demonstrated experience in a role working in or very closely with policy issues involving science or graduate education or post-doctoral experience in science policy related role.

Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in a role working in or very closely with policy issues involving science or graduate education.
